#2860256 Tony Dungy: "I wouldn't have taken him." (Michael Sam)

Posted by tailg8or on 21 July 2014 - 06:25 PM

Its not different from a southern white football coach in 1960 not wanting black players on the team.

Yes, its different. Dont try to bridge civil rights and this. Dungy simply said he didnt want the distraction. What football coach does? He did not say that he didnt want gay players. Dont stretch his comments into something they are not.

Philadelphia

No. 5 is not necessary.  You won't make it through the first 4.

#2818921 Tiny Richardson turning heads with Vikings

Hence why he went undrafted, right?

Didnt both our projected OTs go undrafted?? I guess GMs dont always get it right or we are screwed.

Bottom line is DG should have done more in the offseason to secure the bookends. We're hoping an average RT or ... DT turned OG turned OT that has never played OT in the NFL ... will work out for us. That's not good no matter how you look at it.

#2805379 Negative Huddlers

More often times pessimists try to pass themselves off as realists

... and optimists are often fair-weather homers that try to pass their lack of football insight / knowledge as blind faith for their GMs / coaches.

#2789070 Panthers work out free agent OT J'Marcus Webb

Posted by tailg8or on 15 May 2014 - 07:45 PM

Why all the optimism about chandler playing LT? Converted from Dline a couple years ago and has only played part-time at guard. Now he is going to be an upgrade over Bell and our answer for OT.??. As CC would say ... cmon man.

#2788411 Is 4th and 1 now automatic?

Posted by tailg8or on 15 May 2014 - 12:58 PM

Wharton fell down and tripped Tolbert on one play that would have been a TD otherwise. It was just unusually ugly at the goal-line in that game.

Yep ... if you are talking about the 49ers game ... our OGs (I believe Scott was one of them) fired out of their stance very low and got no push.  It almost looked like a cut block.  I wondered if it was by design or did they just get stuffed.  Either way, they got NO push.

To answer Zod's question, if we continue to telegraph plays and cram 11 guys between the hash marks, hoping our 11 will push back their 11, we'll get stuffed again.  Not going to work no matter who we have playing OG.  IMO, given our weapons, I would like to see 3 or 4 WR sets with a single tailback (Tolbert).  Spread the defense out and let Cam audible at the line (sneak, dive, zone read or play action).  Cam, Tolbert and hopefully Turner will win the individual battles.

#2766789 Draft Build Up

Posted by tailg8or on 08 May 2014 - 11:55 AM

Wouldn't it be nuts if we all stayed up to watch the pick, and the Panthers traded back into the second round.  LOL

I like the old draft format much better.

#2751859 Cam gets 5th year

Posted by tailg8or on 25 April 2014 - 07:11 PM

When Lebron left Cleveland, I think it instilled paranoia in any small-market fanbase that drafted a superstar no matter what sport.

Great point and interesting.  Lebron may be the most notable illustration of a superstar using some of his leverage to dictate the outcome.  I believe this is becoming bigger than just sticking with the team that drafted you.  These guys are managing their brand and markets make a difference.

In baseball, it is usually about the money.  That's why Red Sox become Yankees.  In sports with salary caps, superstars will get paid similar no matter where they go.  Why not take your talents to South Beach.  In Lebron's case, it should have been an easy decision.  Live in Cleveland with mediocrity or assemble a team of superstars in Miami.  All I am saying is the Panthers need to start building around Cam and making this an attractive place to stay.  I don't believe Shula as our OC will help the cause.

#2751805 Goodell now wants to make the draft 4 days instead of 3

Posted by tailg8or on 25 April 2014 - 06:34 PM

Are the ratings really that good beyond round 1?  Wow, there must be more draft fanatics than I thought.  After rd. 2, I check it periodically to see who the Panthers picked but cannot listen to any more Kiper, McShay or Berman.  Two days is enough.

#2736561 I'm glad this whiny bitch isn't a Panther...

Posted by tailg8or on 11 April 2014 - 04:05 PM

It's nothing personal. Will always be one of my favorite Panthers. Now that he's a Raven, i would like to see our D administer a lesson in humility. Times change.

#2718594 Free Agency Losers

Below is the piece on Cam.  Pretty much nails it.  Link to Adam Levitan's article is above.  FA isn't over and the draft is yet to come, but there is much more work to be done.  BTW, save the posts about being cap-strapped, we went 12-4 last year and in DG we trust.  Reality is that we are in rough shape right now and there will be no chemistry on the OL, between Cam and his WRs, and in the defensive backfield.  Rivera has a big job in front of him once DG pulls together a roster.

 1. Cam Newton, QB, Panthers
The daggers are coming fast and furious at Cam Newton right now. Let’s start with the offensive line.

Jordan Gross, PFF’s No. 3 left tackle last season, has retired. Travelle Wharton, PFF’s No. 5 guard last season, remains an unsigned free agent. Backup G/C Geoff Hangartner has retired. If the season started today, the projected offensive line is a rag-tag group of Byron Bell at left tackle, Garry Williams at right tackle, Amini Silatolu and Edmund Kugbila at the guard spots and Ryan Kalil at center.

Bell was PFF’s No. 52 tackle last year while playing on the right side and figures to struggle even more on the left side. Williams is former UDFA with 21 career starts in five seasons. Silatolu and Kugbila are youngsters coming off serious injuries. Kalil is the only sure thing. It's arguably the worst unit in the NFL.

OK, now let’s get to the receiving corps. This was a sub-par unit a year ago with declining Steve Smith and underperforming Brandon LaFell leading the way. Now those two are gone, as well as speedster Ted Ginn. The Panthers failed to truly address the position in free agency, only adding 32-year-old (in June) Jerricho Cotchery and Tiquan Underwood to Marvin McNutt and Tavarres King. It’s a room devoid of playmakers.

The third negative for Newton in free agency is significant defensive improvements around the NFC South. The Saints added Jairus Byrd to pair with Kenny Vaccaro at the safety spot. The Bucs scooped up Michael Johnson, Clinton McDonald and a Revis replacement in Alterraun Verner. The Falcons added size with Tyson Jackson and Paul Soliai.

Lastly, Newton underwent ankle surgery to repair a ligament issue that’s bothered him since Auburn. He’s been slapped with a four-month rehab timetable, meaning he’ll miss offseason workouts with his new “toys.”

#2696495 Thomas Davis not pleased with Carolina not signing Nicks

Posted by tailg8or on 14 March 2014 - 09:18 PM

I believe Mitchell had more INTs than our entire remaining WRs had catches last year.

Shame on you TD for making such a comment.  Don't you know it is all part of a master plan and there is only 1 road out of cap hell.  DG's two safeties and Ginn saved your ass last year.  Have faith brother!  He will do it again.

Take a bite from our Big Bowl of Sanity thread.  You'll feel better.
