#3300647 Severe punishments for Browns, Falcons

Posted by rayzor on Today, 02:13 PM

Texting durring games?

Whats the big deal with that?

you were told wrong.

With that important piece of business done, commissioner Roger Goodell plans on turning his attention toward the Browns.
Specifically, he will “focus on” the illegal texting from Cleveland general manager Ray Farmer to coaches on the sideline during several 2014 games.
Electronic communication is banned from 90 minutes prior to kickoff until the end of the game.

http://chronicle.nor...erious-offense/

part f the reason kyle shannahan left the browns was supposedly because he felt uncomfortable with the GM and other members of the personnel dept. sending texts to the field. one of the big issues is that they were sending the texts from the press box. from what i understand, the texts were more opinions and suggestions rather than orders or something as nefarious as communicating with the other teams. they seems to have been pretty harmless and more just annoying to the coaching staff having the GM and guys from personnel meddling.

but rules are rules. you can't use those devices on the sidelines. communication is limited to the headsets and that one phone line to the booth.

Voth just said...if he makes at least 8 million, and plays 10 games...we get a 3rd rounder.

of course that would be next year....just in case anyone was thinking it would be this year.

#3286427 Kurt Coleman Info

The most interesting news to me is that yet another FA signing gets a 2-year deal.

In 2013 Gettleman handed out a ton of 1-year deals (Munnerlyn, Mitchell, Ginn, Mikell, Florence, etc) and after some of those guys had breakout seasons they left and got paid. It left a lot of holes on the team and forced Dave to really hit a grand slam in back to back seasons on his cheap FA signings because of our cap situation. He swung for the fences again but missed badly on a few guys.

To me this is a sign of Dave adapting and making changes. And most importantly, learning from his mistakes. He's still sticking to his philosophy and gameplan, but he's improving upon it. He's confident that he can do his homework and find talented players that are cheap. But instead of giving them 1-year deals he's locking them up for 2-years. Now if any of these guys have a breakout season we get them for a cheap 2nd year instead of having to overpay them or lose them as a FA and have holes on the team all over again.

I like it.

solid perspective.

#3284994 What's wrong with this?

Posted by rayzor on 15 March 2015 - 02:10 AM

i am not a fan of the way that gettleman has handled the offense since he came in, but he did draft a WR in the first round last year so that was a step in the right direction.... after taking away 3/4 of his receivers. 3 steps backward, one step forward. philly finaly catching on helped some. the two dollar store guys we picked up in FA....well, we got what we paid for.

i think  he stumbled onto a couple potential gems on the OL, but it wasn't a priority. hopefully oher goes back to his successful ways here and remmers doesn't take a step back. the interior of the OL is good and solid, but the OTs are still very much a wait and see.

as for providing cam with weapons, though, he hasn't done well. KB should have been added to an already solid WR core.

this year gettleman HAS to do better about getting cam some more help. we have to get a WR in either the first or second round this year and we have to add a better class of FA receiver than we did last year.

depending on how we draft this year, i think we need to decide early on, as in immediately after the draft and heading into the first mini camp that the OL is going to be oher-norwood-kalil-turner-remmers and spend all offseason with them working together and gelling with cam. that, in itself, will help the offense get a better start earlier. quit playing this stupid game we have been trying for years (even pre-rivera) to use training camp as a try out for the OL and wait until right before the season starts to decide what the starting lineup is going to be. that is as much a reason as any why we have been so slow to start every year.

not only does cam need to be getting reps with his starting OL from a much earlier date, he needs to be getting more reps with his receivers earlier. i know it's not popular to want to copy some aspects of chip kelly's formula, but i definitely think we need to model practices, at least on offense, after what he and malzahn have been doing for years and pick up the pace of practice and get as many reps in as short amount of time as possible. that would be hard for us because, as several have witnessed and reported (esp. mr. igo) there is no sense of urgency in the preparation for the season. it's been just a laid back chill time and then it seems they have a bit of a shock as they start the season and it takes them a couple weeks to get their bearings. that has to stop.

i could talk about shula, but he continues to be exactly who i thought he would be in the management of the offense and no one can convince me that he isn't holding our offense back, but i'm not going to beat that dead horse. the FO and HC seems bent on staying that course so it is what it is.

what can be changed is solidifying that OL earlier, giving cam more weapons, and finding a way for cam to get better chemistry with his OL and receivers heading into the season so the can make the most out of the limited opportunities shula's offense provides.

the offseason is still very early. FA has just gotten underway and there are going to be quite a few opportunities to add strength to the receiving corps through that and the draft (which is a big gettleman strong point aside from being too obsessed with the DL) is still to come. there's still time to improve in areas that need to be improved and we have a bit more money now, but we have to do better than what we have done in previous years because we really haven't done a whole hell of a lot to help cam out to this point....at least not from one year to the next.
