Every time a veteran player shows that he's done, he's gone - he's just gone - maybe not as quick as you'd like with HINDSIGHT, but he's gone, I just don't understand the persistence in this topic.

I understand Fox held onto Foster too long, but he thought he was the best chance to win and in that time, it was. Upon hindsight, it wasn't, get over it. Do not forever brand Fox as someone who holds onto vets too long. It's just not true...

I'm not truly a Fox apologist, but I am today...

agreed. there are a good few things that are problems that fox has but that he prefers vets over better performing rookies is a myth that has been debunked quite a bit. when you look at actual record, especially in the last couple years, you will find a very different story. Him keeping vets in starting roles over rookies that are better is by far the exception rather than the rule. i'm not going to spell it all out again but i will post my thoughts from another thread...

I think Fox has shifted his direction once again on starting or using rookies. I think Beason made him take a second look at it. Beason's success as a starter at the most important position on defense and the team's response probably took Fox by surprise. I doubt that was the ideal situation for him. He wanted Morgan to start and did at MLB but then Morgan went down and Fox had very little choice but to start Beason. It worked.

Last year we had 2(kind of 3) rookies starting for us. Who would have thunk that? Otah, Godfrey, and you could also say that Stewart was given much more responsibility than rookies are normally given. Fox had a slew of Olinemen to choose from but he chose Otah. That speaks volumes. The old Fox would most likely have gone with Terrence Holt at FS...after all, he was a vet with a good amount of experience and had done OK in the past. He didn't just start Godfrey over Holt, He felt so confident in Godfrey that he cut Holt.

He has had success with rookies before but I think he is beginning to trust them more.
2002: Peppers, Witherspoon
2003: Gross
2004: Colbert, Wharton, Gamble
2005: none
2006: none (though Marshall ended up starting 8 games by season's end)
2007: Beason (though he started out at WLB)
2008: Otah, Godfrey (maybe you could count Stewart there)

Yet Collins had more pass attempts than Jake. Shows why we're up high on that list too.

I have never been sold on gross as a starting LT in our run first offense and truly regret the decision to sign him long term. Oh well.

yeah, we should have just let one of the best LTs in the league walk.

crap...let's let them all walk. contracts? who needs them.

lets let everyone come and go as they please. just as long as we don't have to spend any major cash. they should be happy to be here just because and if they aren't then let them go.

I have to agree...

Gross earned his money this year and proved it was a wise decision to keep him. Trying to replace him would have been easier said than done.

Settle down twitch. Just making a statement. A larger left tackle would be ideal for our O in my opinion.

The thing about Gross was he'd been mostly a RT for his career. I wanted to see what he could do with a full season at LT before being happy with a humongous contract.

So, he had a full season at LT, was one of the best in the league at the position AND made a Pro-bowl.

Guy more than earned his contract. Good for him and us.
