i think since he put himself out there and saw not a lot of teams wanted him we could now pay him less for a long term
deal.

Bad part of that is we can't have contract talks with him during the season, so we'd be in a similar situation to what we had with Gross.

Not saying too much since we offered him a 90 million dollar contract after his 2.5 sack season.

I could be wrong but I thought you could resume talks w/ a FT player after a certain period. It used to be that way anyhow.

Perhaps I'm missing some sarcasm or something here but if he signs a long term deal, there would be no need to franchise him next year.

I have said before that I don't necessarily want to see them ink him to a long term before the season. While it would be nice to have the security of not having to deal w/ this all over again (and possibly free up some cap space), I think that he will be much more motivated to dominate (like he has the god given gifts to do) if he is in a contract year again.

Nah it's a violation of NFLPA rules now and results in some sort of sanction against the team. After July 15th the team and player can't talk about contracts anymore what so ever. The player has to play out the Franchise tag till the Off season resigning period starts.

If I can find the link again I'll post it. It's been a while since I looked at it.

Don't you think it would be cool to have a collection of different teams, kind of like a TO collection.

I thought the July 15 deadline was the lastest the team could remove the tag if the player had not signed the tender. Thus resulting in no contract talks thereafter. But if the player signs the tender before that date, contract talks can continue until the end of the pre-season. Then once the season starts, no more talks can resume until after the trading deadline.

That's whats in my head and its very detailed and complicated so if I'm wrong, which I very well could be, then I'm not sure where it all came from...

Teams can officially designate Franchise and Transition Players between Feb 5, 2009 and Feb 19, 2009.

February 26 is the deadline for clubs to submit qualifying offers to their RFAs whose contracts have expired and to whom they desire to retain a Right of First Refusal/Draft Compensation.

Free Agency officially begins on February 27. For RFAs, the period officially ends on April 17. The deadline for old clubs to exercise the Right of First Refusal to RFAs is April 24. For UFAs (including Franchise players and Transition players), who have been given a tender offer from their prior team, the period officially ends on July 22 or the first day of training camp -- whichever is later.

Under the old CBA, a team had until March 17 to work out a long term deal with its Franchise Player. If the team signed the Franchise Player between March 18 and July 14, the tag would have stayed with that player for the length of his contract, which meant that the team could not name another Franchise Payer until that player's contract was terminated. The updated CBA pushed that date back until July 22, the same as the free agency deadline. However, there remains a caveat: The club may NOT sign the tagged player to a long-term contract after July 14. That is, the team has until July 14 to sign the tagged player to a long-term contract; afterwards the player may sign only a one-year contract with his prior team, and the contract may not be extended until after the last regular season game.
