Oh and I am sure Hurney tried his best to get a 2nd rounder, I don't think he came flat out and said, "Oh we will take a 3rd rounder and 5th rounder." I am sure he negotiated and that was the best offer he could've gotten for him
Stop using logic here. Let people just bitch and moan and keep telling us that if they were GM how much better they could do.

Has everyone forgotten the 2004 and 2005 seasons? The D-line performed very well without Jenkins. In fact, one could argue that they performed much better during those two seasons than they did the past two.

I think a lot of you are putting way too much stock into what Jenkins was, not what he is. The Panthers simply did what they had to do to get something in return for him. Without a trade, he would have simply left via free agency. History has shown that the Panthers can get the job done on DL without him.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this...Softli is gone, and it appears that he may have been the one behind a lot of the bad draft intel. Also, doesn't anyone else think we might use their third round pick for ourselves and possibly use our own in an effort to trade up in the first or second round? The draft is rich at most of the positions we need help at.

I'm glad we got what we got. I don't think a high third is anything to shrug at. I just wonder if we could have got more last year.

I think we'll be fine in the long run. It's not like Jenkins wanted to be a Carolina Panther anymore. There's still a lot of moves to be made. Oh, sorry about being logical.

a high 3rd and 5th is basically the same thing as like a mid 2nd so I'm fine with this.

hope he does well and im glad i never bought his jersey.

Exactly. Criticize this move if you want, but people need to understand the factors that went into it.

Things to understand:

Trade value doesn't just depend on how good a player is.

Trade value depends on years left on a contract. Jenkins had one year left, meaning whoever gets him is either going to have to let him go next year or pay giant $$$. If we'd been doing this two years ago (if he hadn't been coming off an injury) we'd have gotten a lot more.

Cap room matters.

You can only get in a trade what the market will pay. Some of y'all are acting like we could have gotten a first rounder if we'd only talked to another team. The Jets made the highest offcer.

He replaced Kemoeatu on third down, not Jenkins. So again, I'll ask....why is he better suited to play all three downs than Jenkins?

Let's not kid ourselves, Lewis was considered a bust for a first rounder when he played for St. Louis. He redeemed himself a bit here, and again, he's a fine situational player but don't try to say he's as good as or better player than Jenkins. That's just being ridiculous.

Peppers was god awful considering how much everyone around here worships him (sickness or not), Rucker and Kemo were weak too. Jenkins was the best out of the four, I don't see how there's any confusion over that.

Things don't work that way except in Madden.
The Panthers played their hand and basically were saying that they would move Jenkins for .50 on the dollar so they could avoid paying him a roster bonus, and the move had to be made today. The Jets sensed their desperation and made the deal, and in my opinion got a steal. If the Panthers just HAD to move him, why not do it last year when we could have gotten a second rounder (which they were saying was not enough for them to accept the offer)? If they didn't HAVE to move him, why not hold on to him and see if we could get a better offer closer to the draft? The Raiders just shelled out big bucks for a mediocre player....now that the market for the FA DTs are going to be much more expensive, Jenkins would be a more valuable trading chip since he still has two years left on his contract. I don't see how a team who is supposedly committed to winning now would be satisfied with getting a third rounder who may or may not even play this year and a fifth rounder who may or may not even make the team, but different strokes for different folks I guess.

It did get worse. That's what you'd expect.

That's because there was a year less on the contract. He's only got one year left. That's the important thing to remember, that the years left on the contract affect the value of a player in a trade. Next year, we would have gotten zero, because he would have been a free agent.

What's more valuable, to trade for a player you get for four years, or for a player you get for one year? (like Jenkins) That's why teams weren't willing to offer as much.

Edit: Or he had two years left. Either way, it's the same situation, that the less years on a contract, the less value.

Jenkins is a boozer whose best seasons are behind him. We need guys who can make plays and he can't make them any longer. Stp whining and move on.

Actually Lewis came in and replaced both of them at times. Morehead came in at both spots as well. At his size Jenkins didn't have the stamina to play every down and often came out on third down. When he was in he got how many sacks over the past 2 years???? That would be 5.5. Even when Peppers got 13 last year Jenkins got 3. So he is never been good against the pass because he is too slow. By the way how many has Lewis gotten in part time work in the past two years? That would be 8 including 4.5 in 2006 and 3.5 in 2007.

The issue isn't whether he will be better than Jenkins but will be fill the spot at roughly a quarter of the price and bring a better pass rush. That of course assumes we don't find someone else in free agency or the draft to fill his shoes.

Jenkins didn't lead the team in any category last year. He was hardly that good. The excuse is that he was doubled alot of the time. So was Peppers in 2006 and he got 13 sacks. Jenkins was decent on a terrible line last year. Sorry if I don't think that was all that great. If the FO thought he was irreplaceable, he would still be here. But I am sure you know more than they do. They shopped him because his down side was greater than his upside and they could at least get something for him now. He was a great player but is a shell of him former self. Watch him be mediocre for the Jets after he commands a 7 or 8 million dollar a year contract.

The FO beleives we need to get in new blood and change the defensive line and after their performance last year I agree. Jenkins obviously wasn't as good as you think or we would have gotten a better deal then we did. yeah, I forgot, you could have negotiated a better deal. Again all that logic works in Madden but not in real life.
