I am not a UNC fan even though I write a check to them for my daughter to attend. It really hurts, too!!! I am pretty much an ABC fan but I did see him play a few times last year. I loved when ECU beat them!!!!!!!!

I don't know if he will make the squad or not. I liked Taye Biddle last year so I guess I don't know squat!!! But I would agree that Taylor does bring a skill set to the team as an edge rusher unlike anyone else on the team. We all know he will put on 10-15 lbs in the next year so he could be a situational rusher this year and move to a starter in the future.

Weighing what he does is not the issue some make it out to be. Sure he is light but there are other very good DEs who weigh within 15 lbs of what he does right now. Umenyiora had 13 sacks last year and weighs 261. Dumervil for Denver had 12.5 sacks and weighs 260. Strahan is 255.

Again I don't know if he can withstand the bashing of the NFL or whether he will be strong enough to play as an undersized DE or whether teams will run all day at him. Still I could see Kemo going out on passing downs and Brayton sliding over to the A gap and and Taylor lining out up on the outside edge of the tackle and sending him on an outside rush. Surely he should be able to learn from Peppers and improve his hand technique.

At this point it will largely depend on how many DEs we keep and how McClover fairs this year. I think Taylor may stick because we always overcompensate for last year's failures. I think that the lack of pressure is a big concern of Fox's and he will be acutely aware of that when making cuts.

I like this quote...

Quote:
Question:There seems to be a lot of excitement about rookie safety Charles Godfrey from Iowa. What can you say to add credence to that?
Answer: He played with the first group to start with (at mini-camp), and I thought he handled it very well. He adapted well. It didn't look like it was too big for him. He fit in well. Our players liked him. Maybe one of the good (things) was Steve Smith said, "Man, that (number) 30 is pretty good." Smitty doesn't give out a lot of compliments.

Question:What will you do to make the 2008 season one to remember for Panthers fans?
Answer: The biggest thing is we're all in. We work very hard. We, whether you're an assistant coach or head coach, don't do this for security. Players are the same way. They do it for the successes you get to obtain. Winning that big, fat Super Bowl ring is the goal for all of us. It is every year, and this year will be no different. Regardless of what gets written or what gets said, whether it's midseason, preseason or postseason, I can just tell you as an organization we are committed to winning and we're doing everything and utilizing all of the avenues to win. That's what this League's about and it's only fun if you win.
I guess no more win 3 of 4 chanting. Looks like he wants to win all of them now, and he's not doing it because people are saying he's on the hot seat, he's doing it because he wants to win.

Just one more thing about Taylor. I found this from when he was recruited out of high school.

http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewpros...=18227&Sport=1

So, he ran a 4.46 when he was a 200lb high school senior, and then ran a 4.58 or so after gaining 45lbs in college...I would say this kid can easily put on a few more pounds without it slowing him down.

Pretty refreshing read coming from Fox.

I like Taylor. I normally don't like undersized DE's, but Taylor impresses me with his vision, knowing there the ball is, and getting to the ball regardless whether it's a ballcarrier or the QB. With out need to improve our pass rush, I also am pretty confident he'll make the team.

Well since Fox said outright that they were trying to get smaller and quicker on the DL, I can see how the guy FITS with what they are doing...whether he can DO IT remains to be seen. All moves so far this offseason whether draft or FA speak to a plan, not a mish mash/temporary hole patching like they were maybe guilty of in the past somewhat (especially on the OL). And THAT I like a lot.

Talking about a philosophy of a bruising power running game and then having Foster/D'Will and small....err....not so large Big Uglies just didn't mesh. At least now we can say that we have the RIGHT personnel to do what we really want to do.

What some of you are not considering is the guy is not going to be the starter (at least at current weight). Where he will contribute is to our pass rush. I don't care if the guy he is facing is 330LBS if he has been out there for 50+ snaps and has to face Taylors fresh legs and 4.5 speed, Taylor doesn't have to be some huge mauler. The DL is constantly substituting in fresh legs where the OL is pretty much out there all game, therefore they get worn down by the likes of someone like JP coming at them all game. Then 3rd and long bring in Taylor and see if these huge hog maulies can keep up. Let us not forget why Freeny fell as far as he did the same "undersized" label you now are placing on Taylor (albeit he did have more college production). I see a lot of potential but then again I see a lot of potential in the whole team.
Now to play devils advocate how many 7th round DE do you see being successful in the NFL?

That's the part that bothers me. If Taylor had gone to LSU, nobody would be doubting an LSU fan if they said he could make it.

For the record though, I believe all three of our 7th rounders have a decent shot. Even Bernadeau has a shot if he can play center, although it's kind of hard to imagine them cutting Hangartner right now, since he has more experience.

I'm wondering if Fox wants to be a little more like the Colts. They have DE Robert Mathis, who is only listed at 245lbs and they just drafted that kid out of Georgie, who is a 237lb DE. Hell, they only have 1 or 2 DE's on their roster that are over 270, and their biggest DT is barely over 300lbs. Yet, they pretty much ranked higher than us in every defensive category last year with those smaller players.

Of course, we don't really have the personnel to match their quickness on 1st and 2nd down, but Fox could put a 3rd and long package on the field that could rival it, if he uses one of his DE's in place of a tackle and Taylor, or a LBer as a pure edge pass rusher. IIRC, he has already been using an extra DE in place of a DT in mini camp for the nickel package.

A lot of hate for UNC fans, players, etc. is all I'm seeing...

We'll see if Taylor makes the team or not. Whatever is best for the team is my vote. I only wish the State and Duke fans felt the same, but that's not gonna happen...
