RALEIGH - When the Carolina Hurricanes take the ice for opening night on Oct. 10, they'll be in their standard red sweaters. Three days later, when the Detroit Red Wings visit the RBC Center, the Canes may be the men in black.

The Hurricanes will unveil a third, alternate jersey this season and hope to have it ready to reveal at the Caniac Carnival on Sept. 21, Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said.

Rutherford declined to comment on the design, but team officials have talked for years about a black jersey with the team's secondary, waving-flag logo on the chest.

The team planned to unveil the new design last season, but the debut was pushed back a year because of the introduction of the NHL's new "uniform system" from Reebok.

The Hurricanes are one of three NHL teams not to use a third jersey at some point, with the Red Wings and New Jersey Devils the others.

As many as 18 NHL teams could unveil new alternate jerseys this season, so production delays could jeopardize Carolina's launch schedule, but the Canes are still shooting for September.

Having obtained NHL approval for the alternate jersey, Rutherford said they could be seen on the ice as soon as the Detroit game, when owner Peter Karmanos figures to be in the stands. League guidelines encourage teams to use the alternate jerseys no more than 10 times per season.
"We wouldn't wear it opening night," Rutherford said. "Our jerseys as they are now are really nice jerseys in red and they're really popular. ... It could be [Detroit]. It won't be opening night, but after that sooner rather than later, probably. We haven't made that decision."

I would love to have a black jersey, but I've never been fond of the waving flag logo. If I didn't know it was a flag, I would have never known what it was supposed to be.

I love the looks of the flag logo, but I do have a small problem with the fact that when it's only ONE of those flags it means a tropical storm/gale force winds. For it to be a Hurricane flag, there has two be two flags, one over the other.

(I do understand the Gale Force flag on the logo represents Gale Force Holdings, and their association with the team.)

That is definitely a photoshop. From what everyone is hearing that is supposed to be what they look like. Heres hoping for black pants instead of red.

I really don't like the Edge jerseys at all....piping is ghey.

Surprised the Flyers are gonna go back to a plain-ish orange jersey after all the crap they made out of getting rid of it for the 3rd jersey with the retarded "3D" logo.

And one last thing.....putting team nicknames on the front of the jersey is uber-ghey. Guess they're following the MLB lead on that.

i just read something online saying the jersey would have a border of stars along the bottom. Not sure where the stars are coming from. Also said the front would not have the flag on the front but would have a triangle and the traditonal hurricane crest.. Kinda weak, but ill take it.

I love that jersey, Ive been waiting for it for years. Here is the problem. The flag on the front dosent mean hurricane, it means gale force winds. I dont see how they could use that.

Truth.

Hurricane warnings are two red flag with the black square in the middle. Not one.....hope someone catches on haha.

I wouldn't mind the same logo and jersey, just black.
