Default Hurney on Shelton...

Panthers | Hurney says team will be counting on Shelton
Sun, 23 Apr 2006 21:00:38 -0700

Joe Menzer, of the Winston-Salem Journal, reports <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/10/nfl">Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said the team will be counting on RB Eric Shelton in 2006. "I think his rehab has gone great. And I think just like with any young player, any time a young player gets a change to have a year to kind of see how things are done, be around the facility and in team meetings, learn the system obviously with that one year behind him, he's going to have much more comfort when he gets into games, knowing what we do," Hurney said. "He's a big back who can move. We saw that when we drafted him, we still see that, and we just believe he's only going to get better. Hopefully just being around for a year, he will have matured as a player, just knowing what we do." Given RB DeShaun Foster's medical history, it will be important for Shelton or someone the Panthers pick up in the NFL Draft to offer insurance at the position.

I really hope Shelton works out for us. We've had enough bad luck with RBs to last a lifetime.

When was Davis awful? He did score 12 tds for us last year. A lot of his lack of yardage was on the o-line. Until we played Atlanta, Foster wasn't fairing any better.

The draft will tell the true tale of Hurney's real level of confidence in Shelton.

You're right he was a beast from the one yd line. Unfortunately, he stunk anywhere else on the field.

I have to disagree E9. On the simple fact that the team should have learned over the past two years, that there can never be enough quality depth @ the RB position. So I don't see how drafting another RB spells anything about how the feel about Shelton. Obviously they felt good enough about him to draft him in the 2nd last year, and keep him on the team. I know as a franchise, we don't have a good history with runningbacks ~ but living with that low expectations I cannot do as some of you do.

I know we'll draft a running back, but I think if we draft one in the first or second then it's a tell on how the staff views Shelton.

I'm with you though, we need as many (preferably talented ) running backs as we can get.

Hurney isnt saying anything we all didnt know already, That was your typical vanilla response for the media.

To Summarize: He is a young big back that has a year under his belt. He should be more mature & ready to play this year and hopefully he produces for us or we just pissed away a 2nd rd pk last year.

I heard a Brentson Buckner interview on Sirius a couple of weeks ago. When asked about Sheltons prospects, he predicted we would have to move him to FB. Not exactly a ringing endorsement from a teammate.

A 2nd round full back that can't run block or pick up the blitz? Brilliant

Btw I hate it when Hurney talks to the media as I've no ides if he's lying or not

His rehab is "going great." I think his rehab was done about a month or two after his injury.

I can see Shelton being placed at FB, He's got the size, speed, and power. I don't think he has enought to be the premiere RB for the team. I would move Brad hoover in the RB rotation first.
