Kicker signed to replace Kasay -

I read on KFFL last night that the Panthers had signe a new PK.

WTF!!!

This morning, in the Winston-Salem Journal, explained why.

• It had become increasingly obvious that something might be wrong with place-kicker John Kasay.
Kasay, the last original Panther, suited up but didn't kick at all during the either of two practices on opening day of training camp at Wofford College last Saturday. Yesterday, Coach John Fox held Kasay out altogether.
And after saying that Kasay is experiencing some pain in his kicking leg, the Panthers later signed an emergency place-kicker to work in Kasay's stead until Kasay is healthy again.
"John Kasay had some leg soreness, so we held him out," Fox said.
The new kicker is MacKenzie Hoambrecker, who last kicked in the NFL for the San Diego Chargers in 2004. Fox said that he didn't think Kasay would be sidelined for long, so Hoambrecker's stay with the team could be brief.

It also reads that Mangum had an injured foot, which explains why Gaines was starting with the first unit, as noted in a previous post.

We're going to mess around and be stuck with some reject like homewrecker if we don't start planning for the future at the position. It wouldn't have been a popular decision, but Shayne Graham would have been the better choice to have kept way back when.

From what I read in the Observer this morning, Kasay's leg is injurred, so they signed another kicker for now. Said the guy has bounced around quite a bit. Sounds to me like this Joe Menzer is reading much too much into it.

I don't think it's accurate to say this guy is signed to "replace" Kasay. For the moment, I'd say he's just serving as relief. No offense to this guy, but if Kasay isn't well enough to go come time for the season, I don't honestly expect this is the guy we'll go with.

Yeah, but how his leg got sore is a concern to me, since training camp just started... I hope everything is A OK.

Yes, I agree it's a concern, I was mainly commenting that this guy hasn't been signed to replace him - just take his place until he's better. I would imagine that if Kasay has to miss significant time, they're be more of a try-out.
