Default Kirwan: Is power offense making a comeback?

Quote:
It's still in the formative stages, but here's the plan as I understand it: Force the undersized weak linebacker to play on the line of scrimmage; make the hybrid safety play in the box, make the undersized pass rusher play over the offensive tackle with a tight end able to block down on him and send a fullback, who is bigger than the middle linebacker, right at him. It might not be exciting football but it would be a very interesting way to attack speed defenses.

Seems like Hurney and Fox are on this bandwagon too, but no mention of that is made in the article, just Parcells. Not especially surprising as every Kirwan article is about him.

I think offense has had so many rules made in their favor that you have to consider it. The NFL wants high light reels!

Sounds a lot like what Fox wanted to implement when he drafted Stewart and Otah.

Just a sidebar, but I love how the press acts like Tony Sparano doesn't even exist and Parcells is the head coach of the Dolphins...

I dunno, everyone likes watching a big back blow up a LB.

Sadly I've found a good catch is more entertaining to the avg fan than a good 8yard run.

Not only does this strategy work against 4-3 defense but most 3-4 defenses as well which are built to blitz and attack. If you can establish a good running attack and keep the linbackers close to the line of scrimmage it opens up areas behind them for your receivers and tight ends. Having a two tight end set with guys who can actually catch can also be a huge advantage if they stack the box because your play action will effectively open up seams over the middle. A strategy used against us for the past few years very effectively.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us run out of three receiver sets as well especialy with Moose and Smitty blocking. If Hackett and Jarrett can learn to block as well we could have 4 guys who can block downfield which should finally make our screen passes effective.

Waxes and wanes. Defenses get thin and fast to defend the pass and then offenses will adapt and start pounding them. Defenses get big and strong to defend the running game and offenses will adapt and start throwing over their heads.

I like Kirwan, he and Tim Ryan are really good on Sirius. He actually likes the Panthers alot. He's always bragged on us in training camp and was doing the same yesterday when they had Fox on the show. He knows his stuff.

Can you give us a recap of what Fox said on that show?
