I guess it depends. Instead of getting a chance to achieve a dream that nearly every child in the country grows up with, he gets a chance to achieve another dream...only this one is in a place that we shouldn't be, serving a country that lied to him, and fighting in a pointless war.

If our own men and women can't trust the U.S. military, why should the rest of the world when we tell them that we are attempting to do the right thing for them?

I heard the interview. Good kid who should become a real asset to the Army. It does suck though that the Army switched stances, especially right before training camp. Then again, how many of us would have traded our left nuts to go and participate in some type of NFL camps?

So basically, Caleb Campbell doesn't feel the least bit sorry for Caleb Campbell. I wouldn't expect anything less from a West Point grad.

He enrolled at West Point to be a military officer...plain and simple. that is what he is now doing.

As far as your opinions on the war, our government, etc. remember this...this is the greatest country in the world. Millions risk their lives and even die every year trying to get here. And all the rest of us do is bitch and moan about everything.

He got an education and attended an institution where there is an obligation to serve actively for the education he received. If he didn't want to serve, he could have left sooner and attended another university. It is a shame that he got jerked around by the government regarding being able to fulfill a dream job within the NFL; however, his first obligation is part of an earlier commitment made for any West Point grad or other military academy and that is to serve our country and go into active service in the military.

He didn't get this fine education for nothing.

The poor kid is going to be forced in to hard labor coaching football at West Point now.

I hope all you haters are happy.

FWIW, I thought it was a pretty shitty position for the Lions to be in for a while there, knowing if you cut the guy they could ship him off to Iraq.

He did make this commitment when he decided to attend Army. I feel bad for him since it seems like the Army kind of flip flopped on their rukes in the process. From everything that I have heard at this point he is taking it in stride like a true solider and going to carry out his duty.

what are you talking about? Cut your liberal BS. The guy was just correcting the number stated previously for how much West Point's education costs. Go whine about Iraq somewhere else.

He's a good kid. I wouldn't expect him to make any complaints about it. That doesn't change the fact that he was f*cked over by the government. You can make any argument you want about a commitment, but the fact is, the Army made a commitment to him that he could play in the NFL if he made the team. He honored his commitment by asking for permission to play in the NFL...they GRANTED it. Then they decided to f*ck him over.

People can wave their flag all they want, but the fact is, the U.S. Army is the one that went back on their word. Campbell never said that he wouldn't serve if asked, and that is shown by the positive way that he is handling this situation. The Army told him he could play, then they took the opportunity away from him.

It's funny. People always wonder why the rest of the country doesn't trust the U.S. This is why. The most loyal of American's (which Campbell obviously is) can't trust them.

Fortunately, we're allowed freedom of speech in this fine country. As such, I have every right to "bitch and moan" about the U.S. Government ruining a guys opportunity to achieve a lifelong dream.

As for the "greatest country" comments, we certainly have the ability to be that. If the country continues down the current path of political correctness on the outside and hypocrisy on the inside, then we definitely wont continue to have the right to call ourselves that. Do you think that the Romans were prepared for their empire to fall?

Just to clarify, I'm not anti-military. I'm not a war protestor or left-wing nutjob. I do think that the war is ridiculous, but most people are agreeing with that by now. I just see this specific situation as something that is incredibly shitty on the part of the U.S. If someone agrees to serve the military and attempts to back out on that word, they go to jail or are forced to serve. If the U.S. Government agrees to allow someone to join the NFL (which he asked for permission to do), they just get to say "f*ck you, we changed our minds". Hypocrisy, my friend. Hypocrisy.
