Depends on who you ask.
Technically, yes. As soon as you graduate from med school you are a "Dr." but you're still the shit on the shoe of the hospital staff. Usually.

Technically you have an MD upon graduation from an accredited Medical School.
Once you pass the required licensing tests, you continue your education at a Residency, which then allows you to pass the next set of exams, with eventual exams for Specialty Licensing. So the degree in and of itself does not allow you to practice Medicine, the Licensing Boards do that. But you can't do one with out the other. Lots of hoops to jump thru. |

oh ok....well not to sound mean or unsympathetic ...but I really don't want to go to a Doctor that has barely passed his tests..I think the Dr's that do end up barely getting through are ER doctors..no offense, but those are some of the most idiotic Dr's out there. I've known plenty of people who have had horrible experiences in the ER

Yeah, no kidding. Not radiology, dermatology, etc. but they're pretty high. The difference is stress level for those folks.
cat...short coats are for students/interns long are for when you are a God.

Bummer. Tough to get so close. Like others have said, I admire your honesty and your determination. You won't be the first, or the last, good doctor to have to retake an exam. Hang in there.

Sorry, man. In reality, I hate to see someone work hard at something and it not pay off. Michael Jordan got cut from his first basketball team, though... |

Funny thing about Emergency Medicine.... Getting tough to get in, competitive because it is shift work. Short residency too, 3 years. But some of them are just glorified triage nurses. Others are very good. They are being taken over in the form of corporations, so a hospital signs a contract to provide docs that work for the ER corporation/group to provide coverage. It seemed better when the docs had a vested interest in the hospital they worked in. Maybe I'm just old schoolin' it. Meh. |

You will get it this time around and make a better score. You will have done it before and will have a better idea what to expect. You will not be so nervous and it will be a walk in the park. Good luck and don't beat yourself up over it.

Our local hospital is one of those that contracts for ER Drs. My step daughter went to the ER complaining of chest and side pain, throwing up and feeling like crap in general. The ER Dr spent all of 20 seconds with her. She came out with a script for antibiotics, Dr said she had strep throat! We took her to Charlotte, they removed her gallbladder and she has been fine since.
