Default Old Sports Injuries

My thoughts on football don't come purely from watching the game. I actually did play from Pee Wee age up through high school. I also ran track from junior high to graduation and did a few years worth of martial arts when I was in college.

In the process of all that training, I put my body through a lot.

Now that I'm in my forties, my body is having its revenge

I had my share of injuries (hairline fracture to my hand, busted bones in my foot, pulled muscle in my back, etc) over my sporting life. Nothing too bad, but they do come back to haunt me occasionally.

My right knee is the most frequent complainant. It aches a lot and I can't kneel on it at all without feeling a lot of pain. My guess is what caused the damage there is all the time I spent running the steps for track practice. Not that bad on the overall scale, mind you; just "unpleasant"

So who else in here has lingering issues from their "glory days" and what was it that caused them?

I had a bone spur on my left knee back in my soccer-playing days. In one game, I was sprinting down the field (I played right wing), and my hamstring got hooked on the bone spur, which partially tore my hammy. This knee and hammy still give me problems- especially if I try to crouch down and stay in a crouch for an extended period of time

In another game, I was kicked squarely on the knuckle of the big toe on my right foot. The slightest blow to this knuckle still nearly brings me to tears and leaves me walking like a lame duck to this day.

That's it as far as sports injuries for me

I have barely any feeling in my head from landing on it a lot. My right knee is shot. I sprained it once wrestling my dad, ligament damage in a utility cart accident, and I used to jump off of stuff. I broke my right cheek bone when I got hit by a car on my bicycle. That bothers me when it gets cold.

I broke my fingers so many times playing highschool basketball that I got to the point I'd just set them myself....typically during the game!!!

My son is 14 and has already screwed up his knees. He's like an old man getting around.

He played football, baseball, soccer, and rode mx.

One of my teammates from Pee Wee and Junior High (he played quarterback) had to have both his knees cleaned out when he was just in the eighth grade.

Our freshman year was his last year for football, though he did play baseball all through high school. These days his knees are way worse than mine.

I used to play fullback. Even had some D1 college interest. That ended one day when I took a helmet to my left knee. On one hit, I fractured the top of my tibia and bottom of my femur while tearing my ACL, MCL and PCL. My patella was shattered into five separate pieces. The docs placed a huge screw in my knee to hold it all together and I was in traction for 6 days and in a cast for 5 months. (They did things alot different back in the day) I had three follow up surgeries one to remove the screw and two arthroscopes to clean up some "stuff" that was floating around in there.

Needless to say, I still have my share of pain.

I'm very concerned over my son's knees. He goes next week for a full physical and to have them rechecked and a referrel. We've been told he has a split kneecap and needs surgery. I want a 2nd opinion.

Can't blame you there.

Does he try to use his injuries to get sympathy/attention from girls?

(on girls his age it sometimes works; as they get older they get more prone to just tell you to shut up, quit whining and get off the couch)

Nah. But he uses them to get out of doing stuff for us. Never fails, time to break down, his knees are killing him.

I slid down a slide on my feet when I was 10 and I made it all the way down the slide, I jumped off the end of the slide and tripped over a root and broke my arm.

Sorry that's the best I got.

Other than maybe this...
I fell out of a tree once and landed on my face. I don't remember how old I was. Maybe 6 or 7, I was old enough to climb a tree really good.
Three years ago I had to have Sinus surgery. I had a deviated septum among other things. I have the MRI image. I'll post it if I can find it.
I'm pretty sure that's when my septum was broken. I had not been able to breath through my nose since I was a child. I had the surgery and its been awesome ever since!

I hyperextended my right knee in high school playing basketball in PE, and it bothers me to this day. Every so often I will do something to re-injure it. Sucks.
