Default Zambrano to retire??

Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs, according to ESPN Insider, will retire after his current contract is up.

Carlos Zambrano | Cubs
Carlos Zambrano announced his retirement - five years from now.

The Cubs right-hander earned his 100th career victory Friday against the Reds and was asked to put the win in the context of Randy Johnson's 300th a day earlier.

"For 300, me? No, I'll be out of here in five years," Zambrano told the Chicago Sun-Times.

After his response drew laughter, Zambrano added, "No, believe me. After this contract I'm done. I'm serious. Because I don't want to play anymore."

Zambrano will be 32 when his five-year, $91.5 million contract expires after the 2012 season --33, assuming a sixth-year, vesting option is reached.

"I want to help this team and do everything possible to win with this team. After five years, or four years, or whatever it is, that's it. I just don't want to play. I want to stay at home and see my daughter grow up and be with my family more."[quote]

I dont know if i want a player that doesnt want to play anymore.....

I can't fault a guy who wants to spend more time with his family.

He doesn't want to play "anymore?" I'm sure his teammates love hearing that

He has since made it clear that he meant after his current contract is up.

And coming from a headcase like big Z, who is surprised?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that either the Cubs or some other team will offer him enough cash to reconsider when the time comes.
