Default Bustin Feathers

Got to see the kiddo FINALLY knock two birds out of the air today.

The drought made the dove crops mighty slim, and the shooting even slimmer this season, but I sure had a good time. Nothing like cycling some shells through the ole scatter-rifle

She shot a .410 half the time, then my 20 gauge the other half. The season up here starts the first Saturday in September, or Labor day if it falls on September first. I gave my doves to a buddy of mine and he grilled them with a pepper in each one, wrapped in bacon with a toothpick through them. They were frickin awesome.

yeah, similar season in MS.

When i was a kid, you couldnt hunt before noon....they changed that years ago, so you could hunt at sun up. Much better in Sept. Dove hunts in MS, back in the day, were a huge deal. More social event than hunting. Big cookouts, and unfortunately, lots of drunks. More than once, my dad had me hit the deck when a low bird came thru the field.

That said, after opening weekend, the hunting could be really nice, with cooler weather, and less people...as long as you had enough to cover a field....

Someone invite me to go hunt.

In college, i remember opening day football, then partying at the fraternity house, then going straight to a dove hunt. We'd have a morning shoot, then cook what we killed in the AM for lunch....talk about fresh bird... wrap in bacon, grillem up
