Default By-the-mile road tax could be around the corner

Quote:
The year is 2020 and the gasoline tax is history. In its place you get a monthly tax bill based on each mile you drove — tracked by a Global Positioning System device in your car and uploaded to a billing center.

What once was science fiction is being field-tested by the University of Iowa to iron out the wrinkles should a by-the-mile road tax ever be enacted.

Besides the technological advances making such a tax possible, the idea is getting a hard push from a growing number of transportation experts and officials. That is because the traditional by-the-gallon fuel tax, struggling to keep up with road building and maintenance demands, could fall even farther behind as vehicles’ gas mileage rises and more alternative-fuel vehicles come on line.

The idea of shifting to a by-the-mile tax has been discussed for years, but it now appears to be getting more serious attention. A federal commission, after a two-year study, concluded earlier this year that the road tax was the “best path forward” to keep revenues flowing to highway and transportation projects, and could be an important new tool to help manage traffic and relieve congestion.

I can't wait for when they figure out a way to tax the carbon dioxide that we exhale. That will be a glorious day.

No doubt the democrats in charge will look at taxing everything they can. I can't see them doing away with gas tax or any other tax., just change it to a % rather than per gallon.

All these different tax ideas reeks of Pelosi and Co. stomping their feet up and down because they don't have the money to implement all of the things they wanted to when Obama won. Deficit shmeficit, San Francisco needs that water park that will get me reelected!

Dems are going to kill the free market capitalist system in this country with their anti-business, pro taxation philosophy. I wish I were exaggerating.

I can't believe that after having the Dems control the Senate so much more of the time than the Republicans in the nations history, and a fairly even about of Dem Presidents vs. Rep Presidents, that we are not just a smoking hole already! How can this not possible be?

Well, unless Htar is full of crap as usual I mean

Really, waaaaaaaaahhhhhh

There has never been a party with this much power...And there has never been a party so committed to its crazy side as this. It is a horrible combination. Divided government works best and we don't have that right now. But the mess being made is going to belong to the Dems. No matter how many times we hear about the "PARTY OF NO" from the biased media (in an attempt to still blame republicans who have no power to stop the madness) this is their catastrophe.

It's "crazy side"?

Have not seen anything about the really crazy Liberal ideas, no huge gay agenda (in fact the President is being taken to task a bit on that), still have not seen any "catastrophe" - it looks like the plans that were promised by Obama are being worked on, compromised and politically altered to get passed, the first 100 days came and went without that incredible "test" we were promised by all of you...in short, you are just crying about the stuff that is happening which you do not like.

Malcolm X has not taken over the nation, Ayers is not the secretary of the Interior, Obama has not delivered the country to Al Queida....shall I go on?

All the incredible BS you all spouted before the election is just that, and now all you have are predictions of gloom and doom for things that really have not happened yet. Hardly any of the stimulus money has been spent, healthcare reform still has a long way to go, we are pulling out of Iraq and into Afganistan as promised, the generals are still running the army on the ground, Reverend Wright has not become Obamas spiritual advisor, and cats and dogs are not yet living together. I have not seen any new gun control laws come out yet, and Obama has not let the Black Panthers replace the Secret Service.
