Better Know a Prospect - Jared Abbrederis

Mar 18 2014 08:27 AM Zod Carolina Panthers
The Panthers will almost certainly be looking for a wide receiver in the later rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft.

I hope they take a good long look at Jared Abbrederis out of Wisconsin. If he had to be compared to an NFL wide out, it would be none other than Panthers WR coach Ricky Proehl.

Like Proehl, Abbrederis doesn't have elite size or speed. This is why he is projected as a late 4th round prospect (Proehl was drafted in the third round). He measure in at 6'1 and 195lbs, just like Ricky.

But also like Proehl, Abbrederis brings all the intangibles to the table.

First of all, Abbrederis went from being a walk on to a number 1 receiver. Think about that. Walking onto a major football program and developing into a number 1 receiver while catching balls from guys like Russel Wilson. He leaves the Badgers as one of the most productive receivers in school history. That, my friends, is impressive.

He didn't do it by running faster than the other guys, but by running smarter. Abbrederis may be the smoothest route runner in the draft. His hands and field awareness are also second to none. Scouts use words like coachable and savvy when describing him.

The best shot this kid has in making an impact in the NFL is with the mentoring of Ricky Proehl. Lets hope he gets that chance.

I'm a big fan of this guy, I just don't think he'll make it to us in the 3rd round.

I'm 1000% on board for taking this kid.  He's automatic.  Watched him single handedly keep Wisconsin in the game vs. Ohio State.  He had 10 receptions for 200+ yards and a score against first round prospect Bradley Roby.  Made him look silly.

If we pick a tackle and receiver in round 1 and 2 I wouldn't be mad if we took him in round 3. He is underrated and his speed and athleticism is too.

Scouts get blinded by color when judging the legitimacy of a prospect.

We picked Cam and we got Luke because of this silly biased approach to the legitimacy of a prospect.

I think Jared is underrated because of the same biased scouting approach. I think he will be a very high end 2 when it is all said and done. That is definitely worth a 3rd round pick.

Because you made this about race it changes the dynamic of this thread.

Having watched some Bridgewater highlights, I would add Devante Parker to that list. I heard he was returning to school, then Strong leaves, and recently I saw his name in mock drafts. I am guessing that he is in the draft.

Parker (#9) seems to make all the catches.

Abbrederis, however, is a great possession WR who would benefit from Proehl's coaching. He could be a very solid player.

Wrong. He's still staying in school and will put up stupid numbers in Bobby Petrinos offense.

Lol I know I know.... Well he is still underrated. He looked fast at the combine to me. He definitely passes the eyeball test.

Yea he is really quick. Hope we get some good looks in

Zod should start a thread like this with an horrible player, i am trying to figure out if you are following the idea or Zod. ;)

He is as "ready to play" as anyone.  A technician.  I would take him in the middle of the draft and feel like I stole something.

Great word to describe Abbrederis.  He is a student of the game and runs some of the best routes of any WR in this draft.  Guy just flat out gets open and makes plays.

I would LOVE to get him in this draft.

I watched a lot of Big 10 football and a lot of Wisconsin FB (have a bunch of friends from WI).  Guy just jump out at you in EVERY game.

I would LOVE to get him in this draft.

Love his ability to get open, vision to see cuts and plays 2 and 3 steps ahead of everyone else, route tree is one of the best I've seen in this draft class, Velcro hands, and his YAC for someone that is supposedly "not fast" is top notch. He would be solid in the 3rd and the tutelage under Proehl would be sweet. It's like someone else mentioned....you know he's going to get the ball, yet he's able to work it to get open and be a ballhawks for his QB. Reminds me a little of Larry Fitz and how you can't stop him from getting the ball even though you know the QB is going to him.
I'd take Brandon Coleman or Cody Latimer before Abbrederis. He would seriously be the consolation prize.

I made it clear that I was not sure what the situation was--great catch!

Abbrederis runs great routes, makes terrific adjustments, knows body control and positioning, and most of all, has tremendous hands.  Used correctly, he will be a solid, productive player for 12 years.

I would take him in the 3rd round.

He abused the absolute poo out of Roby last season and does a lot of little things well.

I love, love, love JA. My fav receiver in the draft.

would be a great value in late 4th

I think i'd rather have him over Campanaro, kind of forgot about Mr. Abbre

4th round? Not likely. He may go in the 2nd, certainly in the 3rd. We may luck out and get in the 3rd, but you never know with the draft. Who thought we'd get Star at 14 last year? Some teams draft dumb.

This makes sense given Gettleman's comments about what he looks for in a WR prospect in terms of being able to run routes.

the dude makes DB's look stupid on a regular basis.

technician was a great word to describe him

I think a 'technician' is exactly what we're looking for. Anyone know which WR prospects fit this description other than Abberderis?

If we draft this guy Zod's going to have to invest in auto-correct software for the forum.

Like him. Would take him in the 3rd.

An option at WR in a later round would be the kid from Wake Forest (Campanaro ?)  I'm sure Ricky has scouted this guy and knows he's a worker and tough as nails.  Worth a look..............

Me too!

I think our first 3 picks could be day 1 starters. That isn't ideal but that is the type of cap hell we are in.

With this deep draft and our needs we absolutely need 3 starters. I heard Mayock say a team could possibly get 4 out of this draft class.

Ricky would great for coaching this guy up. how fast is he?

4.50 flat at the combine.  Plenty fast enough.  Those double moves are just nasty.  LOL @ one of his major weaknesses being listed as "muscle definition".  Are we talking about football or body building?
