Brandon Lafell - Ohh Wee Mayne

Aug 01 2013 06:08 AM Zod Carolina Panthers
I have not seen much training camp chatter out there about Brandon Lafell, which is strange because Lafell is having the best camp in his career. Lafell is coming off his best year as a pro and is determined to maximize his final year under his rookie contract.

Carolina Panthers Brandon Lafell eludes Captain Munnerlyn and Josh Norman

Typically Lafell is plagued by lapses in concentration and drops at Panthers training camp. But this year he is catching everything thrown his way.

Going into training camp, it was assumed David Gettis would be providing Lafell with a healthy dose of competition. However, the Gettis stock has been falling steadily. Lafell's competition for a taller possession type receiver is now Domenik Hixon, who's stock has been rising since camp began. Hixon, a 2 time Superbowl Champion, has slowly added veteran leadership to the wide receiver corps. This is possibly the first time in many seasons that someone other than Steve Smith has played a leadership role.

If Brandon Lafell can continue to show improvement into the regular season, we can expect David Gettleman to lock him up to a contract extension before he can test the free agent market.

I heard LaFell actually looked faster in TC.. Any truth to that?

Faster as in he can get to point B from point A quicker? No

Faster as in he is thinking less and just playing the game? Yep

lol

Norman looks like he's ready to make some sweet, sweet love to Lennay.

Notice who is behind Norman running 3 wide with the 1's.....

THE Armanti Edwards.

How long do you think this will stick? I'm willing to bet that the majority of our 3 wide sets will feature Smith in the slot with Lafell and Ginn outside.

LaFell was my pick for breakout player this year.  His stats are very similar to Moose if you compared their first 3 years.  Year 4 Moose broke out so I hope the same thing happens for LaFell.

I'm completely okay with Lafell as a #2.

He is reliable, catches (almost) everything, can find soft spot in zone, potential big play ability...not to mention is an absolute BEAST run blocking.

All of the above on top of the fact that he has gotten better every year...I think we all need to sit back and appreciate the luxury of Lafell.

Is it noticable that LaFell is playing on the outside more this TC? Or should we still expect LaFell lining up more in the slot than Smith?

Interesting that there's been more discussion about gettis on here than the progression of lafell since camp started because even after being out of the loop for two years people will not stop fuging talking about gettis
I've ways thought Lafell was better than the credit given to him, and a nice potential #2 guy. Good to hear he's making strides.

Also, never underestimate a guy in a contract year. He knows he has a lot riding on his production this year.

that's good stuff about lafell. solid #2s are always good.

still don't want to see what happens if we lose smitty for any period of time. we need someone else who demands double coverage. has lafell reached that point? is the potential there to? i have my doubts with with both.

i do think that he's going to continue to be one of the most reliable receivers in the league.

If the last practice with Smith being out is indication, it would resemble a weird piece of impressionistic performance art.

Not to get off of Lafell, but Armanti is running with the 1's?  Is he playing well?

The bolded statement is the reason that many are down on LaFell.  They want our #2 to be the #1 in waiting.  LaFell is a very good #2 WR.  But, I don't think that he is enough to be a #1 WR threat.  We need to get that guy next year.

He, Pilares, and Adams are neck and neck behind Ginn.

What about Hixon?  I had some hope that he would give us a nice #3 or #4 vet WR.

Hixon is more likely to get a spot behind Lafell, taller possession type recievers both being 6'2. I think Hixon makes the team. That leaves maybe 2 spots for Ginn, Adams, AE, and Pilares to try for.

I view Hixon as the #4 guy. Solid possession type and can get open, but he doesn't have the speed or athletic ability that Ginn has.

I think Hixon and Ginn will both serve as the #3 WR in 3 receiver sets, depending on situation.
