Carolina Panthers select G Edmund Kugbila

Apr 27 2013 11:38 AM KillerKat Carolina Panthers
Kugbila was picked to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine, but this wasn’t likely the most fortuitous selection in his family’s history. Kugliba’s parents Cletus and Lucy, won a visa lottery that allowed their family to move to the United States from Ghana. Kugbila and his family moved to the U.S. in 2000 when he was 10 years old. His younger brother Romauld, an Archer grad, is a freshman on the West Georgia football team. Edmund began playing football in the seventh grade. His size and talent attracted schools such as Alabama, Georgia, Vanderbilt and Florida, but a low SAT score prevented him from academically qualifying for a Division I school.

However, Kugbila has made the most of his time at Valdosta State. After playing in all 10 games in 2009 as a reserve, Kugbila started 10 games at tackle in the following season, and recorded the second most knockdown blocks on the team. In 2011, Kugbila moved to guard and played in all 10 games with eight starts. He was named all-conference and third team All-American. Kugbila finished his college career by helping Valdosta claim the national championship in 2012.

He was projected as a 7th rounder to FA by some while Walter didn't even have him making the top 20 G prospects. Maybe it's just because he is D-2.

I'll trust the GM that he knows something we don't but it strikes me as a huge stretch

I already have something I put together but I honestly don't have time to dedicate to it. If you want to run with it PM me and we'll talk.

If this kid comes out of the gate and is an amazing run blocking gaurd for us everyone will be singing Gettledog's praises like there is no tomorrow.

Damn right
Does anyone have a decent writeup on the kid?
Barrett Jones doesn't have the weight on him for guard in the NFL, especially for what we are trying to do.

"But..b-b-but, he got a 52 on NFL.com!!! It's Hurney all over again!!!!"

Stay dumb, Huddle.

Yea espn and nfl analysts don't have a clue when evaluating players patton had a grade of 83 and fell all the way to the bottom of the 4th

Also not only does Jones look weak he is often injured
I know 0 about the dude but from what I've read it seems he's versatile and can be really good.

Wished we went with a safety but can't fault Gettleman for trying to improve both sides of the line.

Umm eric reid was a stud. Late riser.

He appeared like a stud because of Claiborne, Peterson and Mathieu. He gave up 7 TDs in coverage this season and missed tackles left and right.
I think Jones could've started day one. Drafting this guy may be more promising long term, but I think we still need a vet stop gap. No, not Hangartner, preferably one who can actually play.
After reading up on this kid, I really like the pick.

Top make things even sweeter, Rodgers and Rambo made it to the 5th round!

1. Chill the fug out, its not the end of the world the board went down for 30 minutes. Wow drink a couple beers, chill out and then come post. It's not a big deal. We are lucky to have this place.

2. All the people overreacting need to chill the F out. This is a solid pick. The guy had ZERO sacks against him in his college career and he is raw. We are building for the future.

CHILL THE fug OUT

You and me man, We think alike.

The hate for Gettleman (GOD) is certainly building. Lol I knew it

Yes because Eric Reid was such a wise pick in the first round.

I'd take Reid over any 2 of our Safeties combined.

His Heath/injury is probably why he slipped that far and why we passed him up
I like the prospect, just not the round we took him in. There is a high probability that he could have been had next round, and there were better prospects on the board at the time. However, I think that Gettleman is going to use this upcoming season to evaluate every player on our offense and see what makes the most sense in the draft next year. Give him the benefit of the doubt guys.

    • Zod PIE'd this

I feel like the intelligent posters understand why these picks are needed and are in fact good picks.

We neglected the trenches a bit too long and it's payback. Too bad otah couldn't hang with it
If you guys want to make suggestions about Zod's servers, there is a way to go about it. No need to be a jackass.

I'd take Reid over any 2 of our Safeties combined.

Good for you.

I'm so tired of you. Youre new here and acting like you know more than any scouts and experts.

OMGZ....good luck

There's nothing implying or indicating this was a panic pick. If it were a panic pick, it'd have been someone like B. Jones or one of those other OGs that were "rated higher". If anything this pick screams "I know who I like and internet scouts and talking hairdos be damned. I'm taking the guy I think will be the better NFL player".

And Marty had that same approach. Every GM does. The prideful "I know something you don't because I'm me" mentality. In the end theres something to be said for the general consensus. There's a reason higher rates players are rated higher.

Oh no, Chuck is tired of me. What ever will I do?

There's a reason higher rates players are rated higher.

And is it always correct?
