BREAKING: Panthers OT Jordan Gross has agreed to a restructured contract. Base salary reduced from $8.7M to $1M in '13, $6.7M to $1M in '14.

@SteveReedAP4m
I'm not sure at this point if years were added on to the contract, but that would make sense. Hope to know more soon.

That'll help.

Gettleman is getting poo done in a poo situation

Hats off. Now time for a perfect draft
Seriously. That's one hell of a pay cut. The paa-hts are in motion.
Spoiler
Reed said his base salary was reduced to those figures not his cap hit. Most all his cap space was salary with little signing bonus. They likely added 1 or 2 years to the contract and converted salary to signing bonus. That will reduce his cap hit by several million but potentially create dead cap space on the back end. We did not save all that money and he didn't just take a huge cut. Get real people.

How much cap room do we have in total now?

Restructures as in took less money or converted base to a bonus? or a combination of both?

Base salary reduced, but no mention of if or how much was converted to bonus. There is no way he simply agreed to 1/8 the salary this season.

On the surface that looks like a pretty sizable pay cut. Thank you indeed Mr. Gross.

I'll wait to see how it all comes out before I get too excited though.

Yeah I don't think he just voluntary taking 7 million less, its probably converted into a bonus.

These guys get it, pay attention to them.

It depends on how much was converted to bonus.

does not matter we have cap money Now.. does not matter how much Jerry has to pay under the table...

Yes, it does. There is no such thing as under the table.

It will help, yes.

Yeah, but he'll probably retire, get cut, traded or restructure again before those later years that we are pushing his cap hit towards. He is 32 after all.

Check out what someone on twitter said about it: Nick Mensio@NickMensio
All those extra years on Gross' deal in the NFLPA system are just dummy years to bring the 2013 cap hit down, then, it appears. #Panthers
Why so srs? Most of the people here have been waiting for gettlegear get in motion with the contract
It looks like it's just a loop hole in order for the Panthers to address needs this season. Gross will still get his money and the Panthers will still have to address te cap problem, it will just be down the road.

Wish I could tweet at the guy and thank him or something. Remarkably admirable.
It's a smart move by Gettleman because it might allow the Panthers to compete for the playoffs this year and in turn save Rivera's job being that they could technically afford a semi big name free agent, it would just have to be on a one year contract.

I wouldn't even consider that "re-structure". He just took a massive pay cut. This is great. WE HAVE CAP ROOM!!!

he didn't take a pay cut, it's probably an combination extension/more signing bonus which means he gets paid more now but the team can spread the cap hit over more years thus lowering his number.

It's basically a win win
looks like we're saving close to 3 mil, on the flip side his deal is voidable next year. OL here we come!
Gettleman has done more positive cap management in this single offseason than Hurney did the past 4 seasons.

I know there is no such thing as under the table, I was just being sarcastic. if it translate to cap space now and less of a bad impact in the future I'm all for it... the goal is to be competitive and be able to have a quality product on the field.
I like the move. Even if we are just

I don't care if it's 2 mil or 8 mil. We're saving money for this season and I'm going to be happy dammit.
i bet joe person knows nothing about this yet
