Kenjon Barner over Deangelo Williams

Aug 23 2013 07:10 AM Zod Carolina Panthers
I think Kenjon Barner will have better success for the Panthers under this bad offensive line than Williams. We saw it last night when Barner gained at least a yard or two on plays that Deangelo lost a few yards.

Why is this?

Deangelo is a wait and see runningback. He doesn't hit the line as fast as he can. He has good patience and tries to allow time for the blocks to develop holes. The problem is, the offensive line isn't developing any for him to run through. This results in what we have all seen, Deangelo running along the line looking for room and getting tackled for a loss of two.

Barner on the other hand doesn't have the experience to allow those blocks to develop. This is a negative that is actually a positive for us. He hits the first small opening fast and gets a couple of yards. This is actually a net 4 yards than if Williams was running the ball.

Is Barner a better runner at this point than Williams? nope

Is Barner a better option behind a god awful offensive line? Maybe so.

http://sports.yahoo....ayers/7776/news Says on yahoo Barner has a foot injury. I hope he broke his damn foot. This forum is so worthless the mod is making ridiculous threads about how a worthless rookie should start after three worthless preseason games. He really means it too.
Dwill has always been the kind of back that waits for his blocks to develop (which I'm not knocking) but with this Oline your not going to be able to do that.

Barner just grabs and goes and gets what he can while he can. Basically 1 yard is better than no yards.

Zod and mwright350 are not saying barner is better than dwill. But for this unique situation with an Oline so bad, barner is the better option with his style of running. Of course it's a small sample size and I'm just going by what I've seen so far as well.
I still have yet to see a good argument from a dwill fan

Williams had four carries lol.

we know from the past it takes 5-7 weeks for this line to start opening up running lanes, coincidentally the same time we start winning.  looks like this year may be no different

I can't ever tell when Zod is series or just throwing crazy threads out there that he knows will cause people to get emotional.

In any event, if you want Cam to get killed let Barner start.  I could block back there better than he did last night.  Guy has to learn how to block in the NFL before he even sniffs starting.

And Deangelo rules.  I'd rather have him over any of our RB behind whomever is on the OL.

D-lo has a career YPC average of five yards.  What is Barners? Quit buying into this RBs are worthless after 30 nonsense.  That is the only reason I can fathom why someone who gets as close to the action as Zod would ever post something like this.  I don't think D-lo has the speed to bounce it outside anymore.  Alot must have changed in ten months, because he sure ran a few long TDs last year.  This is ESPN logic on this thread.  This seems like the opinion of someone who doesn't even watch the Panthers.

You call it whatever you want..... I call it like I see it. Whether I am a fan of a player, team, coach, etc... If a guy is underperforming and is getting outplayed then so be it. This isn't about being attached. Go on somewhere with that homeboy.

There are a lot of fans extremely emotionally attached to Deangelo, apparently.

They have Hurney syndrome.

There's nothing wrong with being huge fans of players on the Panthers but these guys are the same ones that would still have Delhomme QBing this team

Barner needs to block better.  Cam got flushed out on one play specifically because Barner whiffed on his block.

Your theory is to have a back who's better running behind a poor/terrible online?

My theory: Fix the damn OL.

oye vey.

DWill/Stew<anybody else.

An argument as old as the chicken vs the egg on the Huddle
Same answer, Hurney stupidity gave DWill a contract any player in the NFL would gladly sign.
The Panthers will continue to try and get some value out of our previously brain dead GM's contracts given to DWill and DStew.
Patience is the only answer until this albatross is raised from the Offenses' backs (pun intended).
Barner is a specialist, and must be put in situations he can succeed in, the rest of the RB corp must do their part.

Scheme, line, etc does dictate which runners can have the most success.

You give a hole (and a FB blocker)....Williams is one of the very best runners in the game.

No blockers, no holes....run him in between the tackles? Williams will look pretty average.....and a true power RB or scat back not relying on blocking can have more success.

If all we have is Williams of Double Trouble....it is pretty pointless to run him with no blocking. For every decent run he will kill 3 drives or put us in a hole

Ya I take that back.

Zod's theory however is more realistic....at the present.

We saw what Williams could do last year with no holes against a good D....get stuffed. Can't have a repeat week 1 of the game last year

Realistic? Yea right.

Realistic? Yea right.

Pretty sure inserting Tolbert or Barner into a game is a more realistic fix than hoping an OL falls out of the sky this year

They have Hurney syndrome.

i remember those arguments.

"jake needs to go. we need a new QB"

"NO! Jake is the best QB that we've ever had!"

"but he's not getting the job done anymore."

"He took us to the superbowl!"

"but that was 6 years ago and before his arm exploded"

"he's a good guy! he's done a lot for the team! we need to keep him!"

I think a lot of fans forget how important Hoover was in the double trouble glory days.

Yeah, people all the credit to the RBs...

Overlooked we had arguably the best or top 2 lead blocker in Hoov and a good run blocking OL.....

Any other GM or HC trying to win would be smart enough to start looking around for OL help.

Any other GM or HC trying to be dumb would be thinking about starting a back who's 1/10 better than another at running behind a terrible OL.

Rivera isn't a GM....he doesn't get to add who he wants. He barely kept his job.

He can however elect to stop running Williams so much.

No one does.

Many have mentioned Hoover in the past. The thing is there's no need for a traditional blocking FB when we're playing this stupid read option poo where Cam is tying to feel the RBs hands for 3sec.

I still have yet to see a good argument from a dwill fan

trust me, don't hold your breath waiting for one.
