Underdogs?

Jan 07 2014 08:35 AM Zod Carolina Panthers
This Sunday, the "Underdog" Carolina Panthers face the San Francisco 49ers in what should prove to be the most physical playoff game so far this post season.

While nearly every national media player is bathing the 49ers in adoration (mainly for ratings purposes), I don't buy into it, not for a second. According to them pedestrian receiver Michael Crabtree is the second coming of Jerry Rice. Why? Well, because he played well against the worst defenders in the league last week. Genius.

Here are just a few popular notions in the national media debunked:

San Francisco has a far superior offense.
While the 49ers do score an average of only 3 more points per game than the Panthers, the Panthers win in passing yards, third down conversion percentage, and most importantly Time of Possession. That last one is key. This game could certainly come down to which defense is more rested. The winner of the TOP battle will win this game.

Kaepernick and Newton are equal.
A laughable notion at best. Cam Newton is superior to Colin Kaepernick in every way. Cam has a higher completion percentage. Cam has more passing yards. Cam has more touchdowns. Cam has more rushing yards. All of this with less weapons and a less than stellar offensive line. Sorry Niners fans, Kaep is no Cam.

The 49ers Defense is equal to the Panthers defense
While the 49ers do have a good defense, it isn't quite at the level of Carolina. Carolina wins in nearly every statistical category. Points per game, rushing yards allowed, passing yards allowed, all in the Panthers favor.

Looking at all of this information and taking into consideration it is the Panthers who are playing at home after resting for a week, it becomes clear the Underdog title is nothing but large market media bias.

i guess Crabtree now has 3 100 yard games in the post season

Why is no one talking about a west coast team traveling 3 time zones for a 1 kick off. This is a big deal.

It's not like they're flying in Sunday morning. They'll be here Saturday, probably. If they're smart. So, while they might still be a bit jet-lagged, they won't be as worn out as if they had flew in early Sunday and had a layover or two.

I dont remmebr sports media being so high on road teams...like they are this year. Normaly they say a road team doesnt have a chance...now all of suddent all road teams are suppossed to win WTF

West Coast teams always fly in on Sat....and the statistics clearly prove that they struggle when playing 1PM games in the Eastern Time Zone

Its wild. I can't even watch the media anymore. Ive seen all the segments they will show all week on espn/nfl network ect.

Somethings just so fuging fishy about the 49ers.... owners/coach.. sketch

but Its completely funny they show maybe 3 highlights.. and end on the INT when they are on their on 15 with 30 seconds to go like they were going to score on that drive anyway?

Show us dominating the line and finding Kaep OFTEN.

They say it was an off day for him... and that this a new team. That game was the first "big" game for us.. no one expected us to win then. We went out and beat them. I believe we can beat them by a bigger score this time. More than anything I want to score points from D.. fumbles.. INT.. anything to shut down the offense

We're the underdogs at our very own home.

I pray to whatever entity that Rivera tattoos this on every player's forehead. Seriously.

Listened to Sanders and Irvin talking about this game... neither one of them gave the game to the 9ers. They gave them an edge in offense but never said their defense was better than ours. I don't listen much to the knuckleheads who have never worn a helmet, I listen to the guys who have actually played the game.

Love it.  I am going to TIVO the game so when I drive 3+ hours back after our victory, I can watch the inevitable Harbaugh meltdown as he realizes his season is about to end.  I hope the cameras stay on him long enough so we can enjoy his pain ... and watch the whiny little boy come to the surface again.

DAMN. I hope we make Kaep look foolish

He does a pretty good job of that on his own.

The Niners have a better defense, a better offense, a better special team, an armsless Kap > Cam, a better town, a better stadium, and much better fans, the Panthers are doomed.

Yeah, the niners are so scary my non-football fan coworkers are pissing their pants.

I think they are flying out friday

To start your day out better ...................

Jordan Babineaux, Curtis Conway, & Steve Wyche on NFL AM all said Cam is the better QB. :)

I love the disrespect card. The niners are actually the prefect opponent. Rivera has been using that card like a boss all year and the players bought in totally. We had six sacks against them last time, their line was healthy, and we rush better at home. they're are fat and happy on their recent playoff success. Most of our guys have never been on this stage and they're hungry!! "we're gonna do what we want and we're gonna take what we want!" G. Hardy

Yeah, the niners are so scary my non-football fan coworkers are pissing their pants.

They have no reason to be scared, the Kraken will look like a litle girl, Kuelchy will be runned over all day, Captain will graps the wind and nothing else, Davis will be too scared to play the niners and the offense will sacrifice sir purr in an attempt to please the football gods, ESPN, and NFL.com.

I beginning to hate 49ers fans as much as taint fans........

Based on your avatar it is a good thing.

Just read this on NFLam.

Panthers will be lowest ranked offense 26th to vet make a Super Bowl ever!
Panthers will be lower ranked passing offense 29th to win a Super Bowl ever!

It's like te media has to keep pushing the notion that it would be highly ludicrous for us to make it past the Niners and Seahawks and even win the whole dam thing, I mean you would have to wear a straight jacket and be a total vegetable to even comprehend the panthers winning.

I mean how dare we even have a winning season win our division and get a first round bye.

Actually since the 49ers had a road game in GB, they are spending the week in Ohio so they will not be traveling three time zones to play.  But i will say this, if traveling two time zones in extreme cold doesnt bother them, this wont either.

Niners passing offense is lower than ours.
And that's why I laughed!!! I mean there looking for every possible statistic or flaw against us! I don't see them writing off the colts or chargers it's just a total lack of respect for this team and organization! Ok we haven't been relevant since 2008 but doesn't that make it more so impressive that without a huge collection of offensive weapons and and not the most talented secondaries we been ballin all season and earnt this spot

Niners passing offense is lower than ours.

Indeed, if you account for the entire season.  Remember the last game the 49ers lost? It was in November.  Kaps season average per game was 199 yards through the air with a 58% completion percentage and 21 td & 8 interceptions.  Since their last loss, they are 7-0 he has thrown for 231 ypg, throwing 60% completion with 11 td & 2 interceptions.  He's definitely coming along a lot better than they were during that midseason struggle for a couple games.    It also helps that they have a healthy offense, i think that has contributed to this; especially Crabtree.

They have a time machine and they already know who's going to win the Superbowl.

Woot !

How the hell do you have an offense like Boldin Davis Crabtree Manningham and Gore and rank lower than ours? That's crazy

Niners passing offense is lower than ours.

Don't confuse NFL AM's homerism with facts.
