Underdogs?

Jan 07 2014 08:35 AM Zod Carolina Panthers
This Sunday, the "Underdog" Carolina Panthers face the San Francisco 49ers in what should prove to be the most physical playoff game so far this post season.

While nearly every national media player is bathing the 49ers in adoration (mainly for ratings purposes), I don't buy into it, not for a second. According to them pedestrian receiver Michael Crabtree is the second coming of Jerry Rice. Why? Well, because he played well against the worst defenders in the league last week. Genius.

Here are just a few popular notions in the national media debunked:

San Francisco has a far superior offense.
While the 49ers do score an average of only 3 more points per game than the Panthers, the Panthers win in passing yards, third down conversion percentage, and most importantly Time of Possession. That last one is key. This game could certainly come down to which defense is more rested. The winner of the TOP battle will win this game.

Kaepernick and Newton are equal.
A laughable notion at best. Cam Newton is superior to Colin Kaepernick in every way. Cam has a higher completion percentage. Cam has more passing yards. Cam has more touchdowns. Cam has more rushing yards. All of this with less weapons and a less than stellar offensive line. Sorry Niners fans, Kaep is no Cam.

The 49ers Defense is equal to the Panthers defense
While the 49ers do have a good defense, it isn't quite at the level of Carolina. Carolina wins in nearly every statistical category. Points per game, rushing yards allowed, passing yards allowed, all in the Panthers favor.

Looking at all of this information and taking into consideration it is the Panthers who are playing at home after resting for a week, it becomes clear the Underdog title is nothing but large market media bias.

What is crazy is people being scared of the 49er offense over our defense based on media hype.

How the hell do you have an offense like Boldin Davis Crabtree Manningham and Gore and rank lower than ours? That's crazy

Kapernick. He isn't really a good QB. He does - few things well but nationally they don't want to dwell on his flaws

Quick enough to to jump on Cams tho like its a trampoline

I truly believe believe this will be the battle of defenses through out the whole game. I believe both QBs will struggle once again like they did back in week10. I believe it will come down to which team makes the most mistakes that will win in the end. I believe it will be a good game overall. I see us winning, but barely. Panthers 17 49ers 14 Panthers pull it out with a last second FG at the end for the win.

Indeed, if you account for the entire season. Remember the last game the 49ers lost? It was in November. Kaps season average per game was 199 yards through the air with a 58% completion percentage and 21 td & 8 interceptions. Since their last loss, they are 7-0 he has thrown for 231 ypg, throwing 60% completion with 11 td & 2 interceptions. He's definitely coming along a lot better than they were during that midseason struggle for a couple games. It also helps that they have a healthy offense, i think that has contributed to this; especially Crabtree.

What are you....Dat Alice's cousin ?

"Well, if you turn it sideways and look at the stats this way....and disregard this game...and disregard that stat...let me show you why we really are one if the best passing attacks"

You guys are pathetic....and scared.

In a game like this, the Play-offs, where you're one or done, I would much prefer being seen and believe to be the underdog.

Plus, I sometimes feel this team plays better when they believe they have something to prove.

The only focus any team should have when they make the Play-offs isn't whether they are underdogs or not, but how many teams are between and them getting their hands on that Lombardi Trophy. In the Panthers case, there are two.

Seeing that those in the media have not placed the Panthers into their "chosen" team pile says that the further this team goes into the play-offs, the more they are going to be seen as "Underdogs." I pray the Panthers don't stop  being Underdogs until they get their hands on that trophy.

Did you watch the last game? I didn't see Cam "struggling." I saw a qb making the best of an Offense that isn't very good. In all honesty, Colin has a much more consistent offense than Cam. I simply don't know why some of you Panthers fans have a hard time digesting that reality. Heck, almost every team in these play-offs have a more consistent offense around the QB than the Panthers.

And, IMO, all this "our defense is going to carry this team" BS says to me that you either haven't been truly watching these games or you're simply very shallow. FYI, your QB, along with the defense, IS the reason why this team is where they are.

I swear some of you are beyond fugging arrogant and blind.

Ask the bengals chiefs eagles what is like to be the favourites to win!

It means nothing in playoff football it's whoever makes enough plays on both sides of the ball not what happend the last 17 weeks.
As for being underdogs I'm not sure what some of you don't understand! Analysts and fans have made there predictions based on personnel because both teams have similar records and there's similarity in how both teams are built, thy have the advantage of having a more talented offense that's a fact most would agree with so they see it as a defensive battle which I agree with but with them having more to get it done!
And I can understand that view point doesn't mean I have to like it but I can see it.

What's Dat Alice? And LOL @ being scared.  This was a post of me explaining why having Crabtree makes the 49er offense better.  You translsated that as me being scared. LOL, you are really new at this.
