Carolina Panthers select G Edmund Kugbila

Apr 27 2013 11:38 AM KillerKat Carolina Panthers
Kugbila was picked to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine, but this wasn’t likely the most fortuitous selection in his family’s history. Kugliba’s parents Cletus and Lucy, won a visa lottery that allowed their family to move to the United States from Ghana. Kugbila and his family moved to the U.S. in 2000 when he was 10 years old. His younger brother Romauld, an Archer grad, is a freshman on the West Georgia football team. Edmund began playing football in the seventh grade. His size and talent attracted schools such as Alabama, Georgia, Vanderbilt and Florida, but a low SAT score prevented him from academically qualifying for a Division I school.

However, Kugbila has made the most of his time at Valdosta State. After playing in all 10 games in 2009 as a reserve, Kugbila started 10 games at tackle in the following season, and recorded the second most knockdown blocks on the team. In 2011, Kugbila moved to guard and played in all 10 games with eight starts. He was named all-conference and third team All-American. Kugbila finished his college career by helping Valdosta claim the national championship in 2012.

I don't know jackshit about the guy and neither do any of you. I read that we drafted OL and I was happy, so I approve of the pick. It's not like there's really any 5 star amazing can't miss studs in the 4th round anyways.

and you're and idiot if you think this Panther board is bad. Try being on the Carolina Growl board where people could pretty much do whatever they wanted including posting scat and gore and one of the mods was a 17 year old racist kid who would openly admit in private message that he hated black people.
One thing that comes to mind when it it comes to post-draft grades is that teams that rate highly at first usually pick up a few players that were highly rated before dropping in the draft, so their picks seem like steals. But one has to wonder why that player dropped so far in the first place. A lot of receivers went ahead of Patton, and while I think he will be a great pick it's a very curious thing that he dropped so far.

Reid was destroyed in coverage last season yet the Huddle thinks he's a stud.

lol the slammed Vaccaro for that and then love Reid.

Vaccaro is a much better cover safety than Reid is.

Only reason he ever looked good was LSU's secondary was legit, look what hapened when his supporting cast was gone.
Not much to do but hope and pray gettleman knows what he's doing. Risky to take a kid like that when there were some very talented big names left on the board. He must have really wowed them in workouts. Hopefully this works out, we have to get some hits with these late picks if we want to build a contender.

The difference is Gettleman is a football guy. Marty wasn't.

This is the hope, yes. Plenty of football guys have been chumps, and I'll be the first to admit his pride bothers me. His "I've been in this league 30 years I think I know what a good player looks like" comment could be the signpost of what destroys us.

Even if it is a development pick he probably beats Hangartner for the starting job anyway.

if we took tavon austin he prolly could have beat hangman for his starting job.
Some of the people complaining about this OG pick are probably some of the same people who would have picked NT Jesse Williams in the 1st or 2nd round because GOLLY GEE *RATINGS*!!!

Williams was just drafted in the 5th round.

Well either way I don't think, even if Kugbila is a miss, it's going to destroy us. Until he has a record of misses I'll trust his opinion on what a good player looks like.

Precisely. I criticized Vaccaro alot but he at least could cover. Reid, on the other hand, lived off Claiborne and Peterson. It was evident this year. Reid struggled all year long.
What a douche, I hope that's you in your AVI.

Sounds about like a poor mans version of Silotolu.

Yes because Eric Reid was such a wise pick in the first round.

I agree with you here that that was a bit of a reach.

But, other than that, you gotta admit San Fran is kinda killin' it in this draft, no?

I'm speaking more to the fact that there's a thin line between confidence and arrogance. If Gettleman is content to constantly go against the grain he better actually be the world beater executive everybody wants him to be. Or he just looks like a cocky old fool.
big time gamble. we'll see. Likely going to be groomed behind hangman this year.

Other than that awful reach, hells yeah.

Tank, McDonald, Lattimore and Patton. Good stuff.
Yea, 49ers are having a good draft except their first. I don't agree with not only taking Reid with their first pick, but trading up to do it. I know they have to get rid of some picks by trading up, but if I were them I woulda been trading up for Floyd or Cyprien or even Elam. Not Reid.

I think the point everyone is missing is this : is there any reason for gettleman to think this dude wouldn't be available later, like, WAY later
dumb as hell pick that could have been spent on someone that was actually 4th round talent

Unless you have seen every teams draft board there is no way you can say that. He could have been taken with The next pick.
Marty hurney played to win the draft. Gettleman's laying to win football games, and the draft is a tool to make that happen - you see a guy you need to make your football team better, you grab him.

it's a subtle difference in philosophy but an enormous one. I love the pick
Don't know so I can't judge it too much. But we needed bodies on the o-line badly, be interesting to see where we go in the 5th. Rambo or Chris Faulk would be nice
Carolina Panthers select G Edmund Kugbila?????Who dat ?????? Never heard of him. He certainly has a low grade. Let's hope that our scouts did their homework on him.
The fans never fail to amaze me with their the morning after Friday night comments.

building winning franchise:

Step 1:

Get big strong athletic lineman...

Dave has a plan. Relax haters

cant fugging believe rodgers, rambo, and poyer are available in the 5th. insane!
One note on the Scouts, Inc. and NFL.com scores, they basically knock off 15-20 points for all players from lower divisions anyways.

He cant help he had to go to a small school because he could not score high enough on the SAT.Our two guards together could not score the minimum on the SAT
IDK why everyone is thinking this guy is a reach. Can everyone not tell by even the first freaking round that every talking head in the media had absolutely no fuging clue what they were talking about? Barkley went in the 4th. Manuel first QB taken. Geno in the second and could have fell ALOT further if not tempted by the shitty Jets. Floyd and all the receivers falling like rocks.

We don't know what other teams draft boards look like, this guy could have very well been taken right where other teams were looking at him. I know we are all still salty about the Armanti reach - but Hurney was a journalist with a slight obsession over local talent. This is a completely different situation.
