Carolina Panthers select LB AJ Klein.

Apr 27 2013 01:44 PM ncguy2184 Carolina Panthers
Paired with outside linebacker Jake Knott, Klein made up half of arguably the top linebacker tandem in the nation over the past couple of seasons. Klein's terrific play didn't end in Ames, however. A solid performance at the East-West Shrine Game might have teams wondering if the highly instinctive playmaker can enjoy similar production in the NFL.
Klein was a three-star recruit out of Wisconsin, but didn't receive an offer from the Badgers and accepted a scholarship from the Cyclones.
After limited playing time as a freshman in 2009, he became a starter in 2010 and was quickly a standout, registering 111 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss and three interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors. He followed that up two more remarkably statistically-similar campaigns, averaging 116.5 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and another interception, each of which he returned for a score. Characterized by many throughout his career as lacking athleticism, Klein leaves Iowa State having tied the FBS record with four touchdowns scored off of interception returns.
Named a consensus All-Big 12 player in 2012 and the co-Defensive Player of the Year out of the conference (along with Oklahoma defensive end Frank Alexander) in 2011, Klein has proved himself to be among the more consistent and dependable linebackers in the country. While he may not possess the ideal timed speed or change of direction of his peers, he's fast on the field due to terrific instincts and effort.
As such, don't be among those "surprised" when his success continues in the NFL, even if he winds up being drafted later than his production would seem to warrant.

We currently have a broken arm that is called our secondary. Currently we're down at Rite aid shopping for a cast. There's a lot of arm casts there but we're buying a cast for our leg just because it's higher quality. Sounds like a winning plan to me.

why would you add another backup-caliber starter when you could bring in a starting- caliber backup?

welp, there go my results.

LMAO People are ready to give up on the team over a 5th round pick.

..Yea,lol. 'Like why cant we get an impact player in the 5th..Waa'...Gettleman is building his empire or his demise...No sexy picks but lets see how it unfolds... His picks are making sense, just wish we had a 3rd rounder...
for years we have taken WR's and DB's in later rounds and they dont pan out. GD you guys want hurney back
When is the huddle not going apeshit?
dont*
He is 250 pounds, runs a 4.6 40, was co-defensive player of the year in 2011, and we got him in the 5th round. Some of you people are ridiculous. This was a major value pick, and he could be our starter eventually on the strongside.
Klein is an insurance pick. A good one. It's not sexy but so far G-Man is drafting smart.

And yet this secondary did pretty well against top offenses last year. An improved defense line only helps them.

He runs a 4.6?! I figured he was slow as hell people comparing him to Dan Connor. 4.6 is good, factor in his production in college and this was a damn good pick.

he is a good player.

Given that every team keeps passing on them should tell all if us that there is something majorly wrong with them
BPA, everyone needs to chill. Hope we can get Chris Faulk in the 6th

he is a good player.

but damn i dont like passing up rodgers or rambo

Yeah, but EVERY team is passing on Rogers and Rambo, not just the Panthers.
I am happy with Klein. He is going to be a great special teams addition and it appears he loves football! Great attitude to have around the team and could possibly develop into a starter.

(would I have rather had Thomas Chase out of Stanford? Yes)

Exactly. I'll bet the character concerns is what knocked Rambo and Da'rick Rogers off of our boards. And it must be worse than anticipated, because NO ONE is drafting them yet.

they are really talented. esp rodgers. i see him as a number 1 WR.

teams are passing due to character / off the field concerns.

those things can be damn in the 5th round when talking about a 1st - 2nd round talent.
can backup all 3 LB spots a la blackburn, and can contribute on special teams immediately. maybe even start down the road depending on injuries. that checks a lot of boxes for a 5th round pick!
Sounds like James Anderson 2.0, can play the run, not good in coverage
This whole draft, outside the 1st round pick, has me confused and pissed a bit. I mean, I know I've wanted some offensive weapons from this draft, but I would've even settled for a S with that second round pick. This was a great draft for S, and we come out with nobody.
So, not only do we not get Cam a playmaker in here, but we don't even get another competition piece for that abysmal secondary we have. Good LB depth addition, though, I suppose.

he set an FBS record for LBs with 4 pick 6s

he set an FBS record with 4 pick 6s

And these weren't 20-40 yard pick sixes, the kid I believe had two pick sixes over 80 yards long.

We got Hardy in the 6th (last time i checked he is a starter)

And Capt in the 7th....

We'd have a starter if we picked Rambo.

you named 2 people in the past decade. like i said, the ODDS of it happening are slim, but it still happens. I mean poo, alfred morris was a 6th rounder last year and he went off. The chances of finding that guy in the later rounds to start for you right out of college aren't very high though.

Gettleman believes that if you stack the lines the rest of the players get better.

It's a theory that will be tested next year
