Carolina Panthers select LB AJ Klein.

Apr 27 2013 01:44 PM ncguy2184 Carolina Panthers
Paired with outside linebacker Jake Knott, Klein made up half of arguably the top linebacker tandem in the nation over the past couple of seasons. Klein's terrific play didn't end in Ames, however. A solid performance at the East-West Shrine Game might have teams wondering if the highly instinctive playmaker can enjoy similar production in the NFL.
Klein was a three-star recruit out of Wisconsin, but didn't receive an offer from the Badgers and accepted a scholarship from the Cyclones.
After limited playing time as a freshman in 2009, he became a starter in 2010 and was quickly a standout, registering 111 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss and three interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors. He followed that up two more remarkably statistically-similar campaigns, averaging 116.5 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and another interception, each of which he returned for a score. Characterized by many throughout his career as lacking athleticism, Klein leaves Iowa State having tied the FBS record with four touchdowns scored off of interception returns.
Named a consensus All-Big 12 player in 2012 and the co-Defensive Player of the Year out of the conference (along with Oklahoma defensive end Frank Alexander) in 2011, Klein has proved himself to be among the more consistent and dependable linebackers in the country. While he may not possess the ideal timed speed or change of direction of his peers, he's fast on the field due to terrific instincts and effort.
As such, don't be among those "surprised" when his success continues in the NFL, even if he winds up being drafted later than his production would seem to warrant.

Why would this pick surprise anyone when we have two starting linebackers who've spent half their careers out with injury?

What in the actual fug.

Lol busted out laughing reading your "actual" fug for some reason
Probably preparing to cut ties with Beason after this season. Need dat cash for Hardy and Cam.

Seriously though we've had arguably the worst STs in the league for almost a decade, why we mad we are improving a huge area of need?

Forgot all about the kid. Can't believe he's still on the board this late.

Drafting UT in 1st, 3-4 DE in 2nd and 3-4 LB in 5th.... hmmm, switching to 3-4?

lol wut? We got a 4-3 DT/NT in the 1st, 4-3 UT in the 2nd, and I dunno what scheme Klein best fits just going off his measurables he fits MLB in 4-3.
Backup for Keek and Phillips' replacement. Was rated the 4th ILB.

Don't mind it. IMO, the weakest pick of the draft because of the lack of need but good depth.
With the amount of holes we have on this team he decides to take a back up lb that won't see any pt except on st maybe or injuries I just don't understand this pick seems like an awfully stupid selection
I'm calling it now rodgers doesn't get drafted
He gots guns..

the odds of us takinga starter in teh fifth round are slim to none guys. we needed depth at LB, so we got a damn solid depth LBer. Think dan conner with this guy. Solid tackler, great backup, not a starter.
This may not fill what many on here perceive as "needs" but for a 5th round pick this is a great pick. Great pick.
A lot of talent and now depth in our front 7 will make the secondary better than drafting a DB in the 5th round.

Klein is much better value than what was left at DB. It's a mistake to draft based on needs this late.

Not sure if serious...
What does it say that with talent on the board at positions that desperately need attention we took a guy who will compete with Jordan Senn for his job?

We got Hardy in the 6th (last time i checked he is a starter)

And Capt in the 7th....

We'd have a starter if we picked Rambo.
Sounds like he has the look but cannot tackle. Not what you want to hear from a LB

Me too
I know that the chances of getting a starter in the 5th is slim, but I'd much rather take some fliers on secondary than I would have more fuging linebackers. When the secondary loses even more games for us people will be wishing it was addressed
I actually like the pick.
are you kidding me, g man and me are ensync like no other. I've been begging for a slb since James Anderson so if this kid starts I'm on board.

We do't need a LB but Klein is too good to pass up. Gettleman is not deviating from the best player available.

Ya cant count on BEason + Thomas 100% Love the pick. Continue to Beef the hell out of the front 7! Yeah, many of you want flashy picks, but i love how we are taking care of our fronts first.

God I feel like I'm living in the 'Emperors new clothes' parallel universe
I really don't understand people whining on here. Some of you think your better then Gettlemen at football knowledge or something. Gettlemen has work and help build chammpionship teams with a few different teams in his career. I think Gettlemen knows a little bit on how to build a solid team. These guys have not played a single down this season yet and people are over reacting. No one knows how the draft picks will fair. Heck we don't even know how Star will fair with this team. Stop judging Gettlemen and his picks until you see the final result. Plain and simple.
We need depth on special teams and he fits the bill as well as could be a starter one day.

Fine pick I say
