Carolina Panthers Training Camp Update

Jul 29 2013 01:26 PM Zod Carolina Panthers
Really good practice today at Wofford. The weather wasn't to hot, and the mosquitoes were manageable.

When I arrived Star Lotulelei was getting some one on one mentoring from a defensive coach. He was fine tuning his hand placement and shedding blocks. Star appears to be self motivated and a student of the game. These two things are as important as his physical traits, if not more so.
Posted Image

Luke Kuechly stopped on the way in to sign a few autographs. The fans love this guy. Luke appears to go to the kids first for autographs, as he should.
Posted Image

Rivera lit a fire under the team today. He apparently wanted a more uptempo practice. Very little time was taken between snaps, sometimes not even allowing players to leave the field after their rotation.
Posted Image

The offensive line remains my biggest concern. I have to think Gettleman is on the phone and the wire daily.
Posted Image

Cam continues to have his best camp yet. He is clowning around less, and showing more leadership. I think he may be maturing a bit.
Posted Image

Barner is a shifty guy. He is 5'9 which isn't very short, but he runs much lower than that. He disappears easily behind the offensive line and gives the defensive players only shoulder pads and legs to grab on to. Good stuff.
Posted Image

Greg Olsen is far and away our best Tight End. I am struggling to find something about the other guys worth mentioning.
Posted Image

Gettis had an up and down day. While he did ok in individual drills, he had some drops when being defended. He is also very slow to get up after hitting the ground. I just don't know if this guy has the grit needed for the NFL.
Posted Image

The good news is Brandon Lafell is having his best camp so far. He is catching everything near him and following it through with YACs.
Posted Image

You just can't help but pull for Pilares. That guy gives it everything he has on every play. He just needs to improve his consistency with positive results.
Posted Image

For some reason Armond Smith did a TD "point to the sky" move during a typical routine drill. Made me laugh, don't know why.
Posted Image

There is some good news regarding the offensive line. They were able to open up some pretty big holes today for the running backs.
Posted Image

The offensive line a few times had a hard time containing Star. Jeff Byers here isn't showing effective technique I don't think.
Posted Image

I like Lafell's LSU shoes and gloves. I don't like our secondary being abused by them.
Posted Image

Jerry RIchardson and Jerry West. I am pretty pumped up that I got to meet West. My dad, who is from WV, will be more pumped up.
Posted Image

Blackburn saw time today with the starting LB's. He is listed at 6'3 but seems much taller than that. He also has a great motor and is vocal on the field.
Posted Image

Ginn and HIxon's stock was on the rise today. Both made some really nice grabs under tight coverage. They may be pulling away from the pack. Armanti had a nice touchdown catch, but I notified him that he only had one foot in bounds. He laughed a bit.

Anything about Smith?

Not sure why, but this is bothering me a bit.

same ol smitty from what i've seen from reports out of TC. nothing to worry about unless you just want something to worry about. take no news as good news.

First thing I thought of when I saw the first Star pick was "talk to the hand bitch".

Interesting comment (I agree 100%) about Cam's maturity.  It is noticeable and it was needed.  So many people on here got mad and had hissy fits when I suggested (last year) that he needed to grow up.  Some held their breath in protest, while others trashed their parents' basement.

I honestly believe that Cam is the reason we have not been repeating as a 2-14 team.  An immature Cam has been good for 4 wins a season, maybe 5.  A mature Cam who is a leader could get us to the playoffs.

A mature Cam does not some how make Nakamura not suck ass and blow the game in ATL, nor does it stop the refs from cheating us out of the Dallas game or Smitty from slipping against Chicago.

But the fact that we have been lack luster the past 2 years does mean it's time for Cam and the team to get down to business.

Just have not heard much.  Tons about Ginn, LaFell, and the others, just not much news on SS.

I take it as whats understood doesnt need to be explained.

Well, two straight days now that I've seen pix of AMINI kneeling down to STAR.

Have a feeling a lot of offensive linemen will be on their knees in front of Star, but who am I to judge what they're into?

we are not going beat da bucs or any other teams with good defensive lines if are online cant block.

Maybe not, but a more mature captain of the offense could put us in a position where we're up by enough that those mistakes don't cost us the game.

great pics of the Jerrys!

I asked a friend of who is at camp about Amini and he said it looked got clipped in the ankle on that play, but that Star had been winning their matchups more often than not.

With the visor Luke looks eerily similar to another tackling machine we had not too long ago.

Don't do that! Please, for the love of all that's good in the world, don't do that.

I was going more for the we may have finally gotten the Dan Morgan we expected to get with the first one. Minus the injuries of course. I think Luke is already better than Dan but Dan was a monster when healthy.

Can not agree more with the comparison. Dan Morgan was an absolute STUD!!! when healthy. Not sure if Keek is already better than him yet.

Honestly I have thought the same thing many times, but too afraid to say it outloud - even to myself.

This is the: "I'll give you a BJ if you stop making me look bad" technique.

I give Luke the nod already because he has already played a 16 game schedule and hasn't missed a beat. That right there makes him better. Dan had all the talent in the world his body just couldn't handle it.

Great OP, Zod.

Really, really like the format of these threads. It's like a picture book for semi-adults, except without the gratuitous porn added in.

Seriously though, seeing the pics to go along with the narrative helps to get a sense of what it's like to be there. Thanks very much.

Hard to gauge all these reports from practices, oline looks bad, then they open up big holes in the running game. Just can't wait to see them play another team

Just shows how close we were with a "less than mature" Cam.  He gets it now.

All these updates and pics are making me antsy! Can't believe its only 11 days until our first pre-season game. Hurry up already!

LOVE the Barner update.  If I'm not mistaken his biggest thing that caused him to drop was that he always ran high and never ran low along with him going down easily after contact partially due to the high running

So if Barner impresses, that will give us another good runner in the backfield.  We would then have Cam, D-Will, J-Stew, Tolbert, and finally Barner.  No one would be able to tell me the Panthers don't have the best backfield in the league.  It's again the resurrection of the million dollar backfield.  The major problem however with this, is I have absolutely no faith Rivera has the know how to put all that together.  So I'm not holding my breath here.  Let's see what they do.

How hard is it to get your kid in the Panther Pals? I'm taking my 6 year old down with me tomorrow and this would make his year.

Sign them up..........and good luck!

My son was never lucky enough to have his name drawn.

Barner looks like stewart in that Pic.

Why is Amini on the right side of the line next to Bell?

OL makes or breaks a good rushing game...also can make good RBs ordinary. Like Williams most of last year. Williams is the type RB who needs an OL to play
