Deangelo Williams Restructures Contract

May 15 2013 07:33 AM SCP Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers running back Deangelo Williams has restructured his contract. This move saves the Panthers 3.2 million in cap space this and next season. There has been much speculation so far this off season that Williams would be released. This move settles that question. The Deangelo Williams / Jonathan Stewart Tandem will remain in tact for at least another season.

Williams was entering the third season of a five-year, $43 million contract and was scheduled to earn $5 million in cash with an $8.2 million salary cap number for 2013. Williams will still receive $5 million in cash this year, but the deal has been restructured in a way that reduces his cap number to $5 million, a cap savings of $3.2 million that leaves the team $8.46 million under their adjusted 2013 salary cap number of $126.232 million.
Williams was scheduled to earn $4.75 million in non-guaranteed base salary with a $250,000 workout bonus this season. Under the renegotiated contract, Williams' base salary was lowered to $850,000 and his workout bonus reduced to $150,000. The remaining $4 million was converted to a signing bonus, which will be prorated against the Panthers' cap at $800,000 per season through 2017.
The real cash savings for the Panthers occurs in 2014 and 2015. Full Article

Saves 3.2 million this and next season..Gettle Magic!!

Also another win is we do not have to rid ourselves of a veteran playmaker..just hope Deangelo comes ready to play by week 1 instead of week 6.

New on Shutdown Corner: @Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams has restructured his contract. http://t.co/FCluOsnbkQ

Party!

Thank you Deangelo!
Good. No way he could of played with his old number this year.

Very good news...get to keep him and create the same amount of rooms June 1 cut would have made. This was the best case scenario

Holy crap, Gettlemania!!

sweet

Great news. Creates some extra dead money later on, but saves us a great amount of money next 2/3 seasons. Beason next?

Marty giveth, Dave taketh away. Gettleman's new nickname is the Janitor - nothing but cleaning up messes since his first day on the job.
I picture Gentleman sitting down with an agent and laying out the deal Tony Soprano style.
So with the timing of the panthers reaching out to veterans like Woodson...is a major signing following?

Woodson? Or Greg Hardy extention?!

I always believed this would happen.  Gettlemen saved the timing of it until now for a reason.

Let's just hope that Shula can make better use of our RB talent.

Awesome.  Excellent news.  Couldn't be happier.

Somebody tell Joe Person

If it had to be one or the other I'd certainly be hoping for the Hardy extension.  However, I'd hope Gettleman has the tact to wait on it for a bit.  Taking money from Deangelo and then turning around and giving it to a teammate the next day or the next week would have to sting a little.

This should put us between $8-9mil in cap space (with JA's June 1st money going to the rookies).  That could easily be enough to sign Hardy to an extension AND sign a decent vet....assuming Hardy's deal is structured in such a way that the first year or two are lower cap hits.

logjam

Damn talk about loaded backfield. Great news though and good for Williams to help the team out.

@JoshNorris @James_Dator This brings DWill's cap hits to -- 2013: $5Mil 2014: $6Mil 2015: $6.3Mil 2016: $2.26 Mil dead money hit

The million dollar backfield stays together!

Vs his old contract Getts saved us $8,000,667

.. could it be that he will be traded?

I hope not .. I've been an advocate for DWill staying since the beginning .. but did a team agree to a trade only if his contract was restructured?

Likely not I know since trades rarely happen in nfl .. but just a thought

Nice!!  Man its good to have real football people running the FO.

Gettle is doing a good job at fixes Hurney's mess

gettlemagic > hurneymagic
