Gettleman hired as Panthers GM
Jan 09 2013 05:03 PM | carp24000 in Carolina Panthers
CHARLOTTE - The Carolina Panthers announced Wednesday that Dave Gettleman has been named the team's general manager.
Gettleman comes to Carolina from the New York Giants where he served as the Senior Pro Personnel Analyst last season after working as Director of Pro Personnel the previous 13 years.
"I was very impressed with Dave's experience and think he will be a very good fit for our organization," Panthers Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson said. "He has an extensive background in personnel and comes from an organization in the New York Giants that I hold in high regard and played an instrumental role in their success."

Giants GM Floyd Reese on Gettleman
Will be watching that page for changes
More than one person one here was sure that the Panthers were taking things too slowly. But as of right now, three other fanbases (Chiefs, Browns and Jets) are still waiting to hear who their new GM will be. And the Chargers only completed their search earlier today.
KC seems to have a guy they're centered on. Not sure if the Browns have even conducted any interviews yet (focused on the head coaching search at the moment, which seems ass backward to me). And the Jets? They seem to be scaring off potential candidates.
So in the end, their timing didn't turn out to be all that bad. And even more important, I think they got the right guy, something a bunch of folks were dead certain wouldn't happen.
Kudos to the team.
He could really be a guy Gettleman brings in. Phillips is an UFA and he's currently injured. NYG still has Rolle and Stevie Brown, so I can see Phillips testing the market.
poor dude has a ton of cutting and work to do!
If he brings this guy Matt Harriss with him from the Giants, I think he'll be off to a pretty good start.

My point being I don't think we'll have money to bring the guy in unless he wants to take a below market deal.
We have to wait and see what they do with cuts and restructuring before you can really make that statement.
I kinda figured you for a size queen
Even if we cut and restructure a bunch of guys, I'm hard-pressed to see how we're going to be players in FA. We need to cut/restructure guys just to get under the cap itself. To talk about adding guys like Phillips, who while he has been injury prone, was a 1st round pick at S (and when healthy plays like it) seems a little bit out of the realm of reality. But hey, anything's possible in the NFL.
Gamble and a few others are getting the "BOOT". A couple others are going to have to restructure their contracts. I can see Gettleman bringing Phillips in on a 1yr contract. Vet DBs these days arent getting the contracts they once used to get. A lot of 1yr deal these days.
I am just waiting to see what a "Good" Cap Manager can do with our contracts before I either get my hopes up or think FA is a lost cause this year.
Had to laugh at one fan reaction though. He posted "Damn you Ernie"
he took the Giants,Bills and one other team to the SUPER BOWL
Actually part of six teams that went to the Super Bowl. Three won, three lost.
He basically took the giants from sub par to being a really good team in the NFC east
Mostly GM's have to work out
Contracts
Free Agency
Scouting for the Draft
Hiring and Firing Personal
Stadium
He's main goal is Building a championship team To Carolina.
He will fix our cap 17+ million over.
