Jan 09 2013 05:03 PM carp24000 Carolina Panthers
CHARLOTTE - The Carolina Panthers announced Wednesday that Dave Gettleman has been named the team's general manager.

Gettleman comes to Carolina from the New York Giants where he served as the Senior Pro Personnel Analyst last season after working as Director of Pro Personnel the previous 13 years.

"I was very impressed with Dave's experience and think he will be a very good fit for our organization," Panthers Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson said. "He has an extensive background in personnel and comes from an organization in the New York Giants that I hold in high regard and played an instrumental role in their success."

eh late round guy are always hit or miss. you never really know. We've gotten some good players in later rounds. Probably just as many as we have bad players

Jst go look back from 2001-2008 drafts. We used to hit a lot of later rounds player. Haven't been that case for awhile.
Great to hear. Love the experience he brings

Why do people act like 61 is old? Coach K is 65.

He is? But he doesn't have any grey hair?

Huh?

Is that Gettleman? Does resemble him in the face. Up-size arms for an office guy.

If so, where'd you find it? Pics of Gettleman are harder to find than shots of Bigfoot.

Aaahhh, makes sense.

Might be in his 60s, but that pic looks like a guy I wouldn't mess with
intruiging
I think his biggest chore is to raise the level of professionalism throughout the organization. He may not be a young and sexy hire but his experience should serve him well in this regard.

He and Cam dress the same. They love those hiked up shorts. Must have been a selling point
Excerpts from the article Gabe linked above...

The Giants today lost a valuable and popular member of their front office when Dave Gettleman was named the new general manager of the Carolina Panthers.

“I have mixed emotions about this,” said John Mara, the Giants’ president and chief executive officer. “Dave certainly deserves to be a general manager, but I am very sorry to lose him. He has been instrumental to the success we have had and we are certainly going to miss him. He will do a great job for the Carolina Panthers.”

“Dave has done a tremendous job in our personnel department,” said Steve Tisch, the Giants’ chairman and executive vice president. “He has been a trusted, respected voice and contributed greatly to our success. He deserves this opportunity.”

Coach Tom Coughlin also added: "Dave knows what a football player is. He knows how to evaluate talent. He has done a great job of assessing our talent and the talent around the league and helping to identify those players who fill our needs. He is more than qualified to be Carolina's general manager. He is gifted and talented and has worked for years behind the scenes to make sure we are the best we can be. I'm extremely happy for Dave and his family."

That bolded quote is the kind of thing I really like to hear.

How many people do the Giants have in their front office? Seems like they have a butt load.

Such a perfect hire though. He is going to get the right guys here and have the cap under control
Say goodbye to AE and Pickles
Wonder how many people he will bring in with him?

I think the news around here won't be dying down anytime soon.

If I just got promoted to head dude that is in charge, don't you think I would be on the phone with the guys I had been working with in years gone by and trying to get them to join me?

I love this hire.

Get on it, G-man!

Keep in mind the Panthers don't necessarily list everyone (scouts, for example, are nowhere to be found).

Buffalo Bills[/url]. He became a full-time scout for Buffalo after the 1987 draft.
Following a year as an area scout, Gettleman was assigned as the Bills' representative to the BLESTO scouting combine and continued in that capacity through the 1992 draft as the Northeast area scout.

Former Bills GM Bill Polian first lured Gettleman to Buffalo.

At the time Gettleman was a head football coach at Kingston (N.Y.) High School.

Polian said Gettleman would lock himself in his office for hours, just watching tape and trying to find up and coming players who might have slipped through the cracks. He said that type of work ethic has been instrumental in his rise to the top.

"He's bright and extremely hard working and loves the game," Polian said. "He really cares about the people he works with and he's as sound of a football man as you can find."

Although Gettleman is quite familiar working with Super Bowl teams, Polian said he's never been one to seek the spotlight.

"The Giants have been tremendously successful, but he's never one that beats his own drum," said Polian, who spent three seasons as Carolina's GM from 1995-97. "He's very good at what he does and he's been at it a long time. He is as well prepared for (a GM position) as anyone that has been hired in recent years

Fashion aside, read his quotes and you'll find he's definitely a fan of Newton.

There's something we haven't seen for a bit.

An article from Yasinskas about the Panthers GM position that makes no mention of Brandon Beane.
