HURNEY OUT!

Works for me.... my biggest fear was the Panthers going on a wins streak, finishing strong at 8-8, 7-9 etc, we get another false reality and all was back and next season start 1-5 again. NOW I can enjoy the rest of the seaon, without that fear.

The Panthers will definitely finish strong... we still have all of our AFC West opponents.

It does not feel as good as it should. This season Blows.

The new GM will want to bring in his own coaching staff. Also, on ESPN, Jaws just said our offensive scheme is complete poo. lol im glad other people are starting to notice

It is a very unusual to fire a general manager in the middle of the season, but this is Richardson's signal that change is coming to Carolina. It's also a reminder how difficult life in the NFL can be. ThePanthers have lost four games by one score. If they complete another pass or two, Hurney still has his job.

Or if they run another power I or two, or a few less read options, or a few less bone headed FS plays, or a few more carries by actual RBs, or playing power football on short yardage situations, or... I could go on and on.

I don't think this is really about Hurney doing a bad job, as much as it is a signal to the rest of the organization that things are gonna change now. Win, or go home. Heads will roll if we don't win games. I don't think anyone is safe from the Big Cat right now. That includes Rivera, Chud, McD, Smitty, DWill (with his tweets, you can't blame him for his onfield play if he doesn't get the ball), and even Cam if he doesn't get his post game attitude together - I honestly think he does more than enough to win games with a little help from the running game.

Don't you wish sometimes commentators when they were trying to play up our read-option pre-games would have just been honest and called it for what it was...something that just wasn't going to work?

Not gonna lie, pretty shocked he got fired today. I know he wasnt the best GM and didnt make all the right moves but a part of me feels bad for him.

I see this as really more a long term philosophical and draft failure. Richardson is primarily responsible for some of the long-term contracts. He often makes decisions based on his heart, and rewards loyalty and work ethic to a fault. That's a business philosophy that helped him make a great deal of money. Don't criticize Hurney for DeAngelo's deal. That was Jerry. Criticize him for trading draft picks and then wasting the ones we kept. Contrary to what some have suggested, I don't think Rivera is in jeopardy unless we end up winning fewer than 5. I see this move, at least partly, as a vote in favor of your head coach over the guy who picked his players. For example, we've wasted a lot of draft value on two guys who were picked basically as return men, and Ron has made quite clear (through keeping both on the bench or inactive) that he has zero faith in both. DeAngelo isn't playing. They tried to send Otah packing in exchange for a ham sandwich. That's a big message to the front office, and I'm inclined to think Richardson is going to give Ron a chance to see what he can do. But the difficulty is that it takes a lot of time to unwind some of the garbage deals we've given out and to bring in enough guys to make a difference.

Also consider that some free agents may be reluctant to play for an owner who is seen as maybe the most Goodell-aligned owner in the league. Money talks, and Jerry has a decent reputation as being supportive of his players, but it doesn't help that Jerry was a jerk in the negotiations.

Well I guess that conversation before the draft really endeared JR to Cam, cause I never thought that this would happen.

Should of been done a long time ago. For him to put so much emphasis on drafted players and to consistently have poor drafts and gamble away future draft picks was inexcusable. Not to mentioned all the wasted money in free agency. He was horrible at the one thing he emphasized most.

Good observation.I agree that this is a pass for Rivera.JR once was quoted as saying there is no more important relationship than between owner and coach.I personally think that Rivera and Chud share much of the teams blame with the exception of some of the talent we are carrying.

Im truley sorry it has come to this - Marty Hurney seems like a nice guy - probably not cut out to be a gm, and hes taken the fall for a lot of crap that he had NO control over.

Rivera makes it until the end of the season due to the fact that we do not have a viable candidate for interim HC on staff. Once the season ends though the new GM will completely clean house. This includes purging the roster of a lot of the older vets with massive contracts I believe (DWill, Gross, maybe Beason).

This makes me truly happy.. NOW get someone who will draft and acquire Winners on this team, not just guys here for a million dollar paycheck.

I am completely and utterly shocked.

I logged on hoping to see that JR did something to shake up the organization (as I have after the last 3 losses, lol)... I saw the "GM Options" thread and wrote it off as another "Coaching Candidates Thread." I thought nothing of it... Just fans dreaming.

I can't believe JR actually did it.

But, I'm not gonna act like most of these jackholes and celebrate a man losing his job. I went from being pro-Hurney to a detractor, pretty much this season b/c I realized that he hired the wrong staff and continuing to ignore positions of need and refusing to sign proven vets hurt us.

I feel bad for him because I know he wanted to win, but he was extremely stubborn.

My only hope is we get the right guy in here and don't get someone worse. Too bad JR waited until Joe Banner was already swiped up by the Browns.

As far as replacements, I would be cool with Ross, but I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hope JR opens up the checkbook and can lure DeCosta from Baltimore.
