Louis Murphy
There is a lot of talk out there right now about Louis Murphy, who appears to be pushing for the 3rd WR spot if not the 2nd. Thought I would take the time to bring the more casual fans up to speed on this prospect.Murphy was acquired via trade with the Oakland Raiders on July 23rd, for a conditional draft choice assumed to be a seventh rounder. This is his 4th NFL season.
Murphy played one season at Florida with Cam Newton, so there may be some chemistry still there. Florida's wide open sling it around offense has prepared Murphy for Chud's aggressive O.

He seems to have the right mentality to make an impact, from a recent Observer article
After mini-camp with the Raiders earlier this year, Murphy said he intends to play this season with a chip on his shoulder, believing he has something to prove after last year. He said he’s heard people questioning him and wants to answer his critics.
"I’m always going to play with a chip on my shoulder," Murphy said. "That’s just mentality and I kind of got away from that last year and doubted myself. This year I know what I’ve got to do."

Rivera knows what he has in Murphy.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera faced Murphy for two seasons as San Diego's defensive coordinator and knows he can be tough to defend. But Rivera said Murphy will be in a battle with receivers like Gettis, Kealoha Pilares, Seyi Ajirotutu and rookie Joe Adams, a fourth-round pick who'll double as the team's starting punt returner.
"We like him," Rivera said of Murphy. "He's a very capable football player, and he'll add competition to that position. We're excited about that."
After seeing him in Camp, I can tell you there is a real possibility for Murphy to push Brandon LaFell as the second receiver. It has developed into one of the more interesting camp battles. Two large SEC receivers upping the game and making the Panthers a better team in the process.
Keep an eye on 83 at Fan Fest on Saturday.

Louis is 6'2 200 pounds, a prototype 2nd receiver for us.
I would not be surprised at all if he gets the #2 job from Lafell or they split time.
Crazy as it may seem it's possible for both Edwards to look better and Murphy to be pressing for the 2nd receiver position. They aren't mutually exclusive.
Good for Murphy. Good for the team.
I love Murphy at 2. He has speed and we need a burner opposite of smitty to take some attention. I love lafell but his passive play and possesion type WR game just doesnt do it for me in this offense. I am loving the positive reaction from players/coaches/fans regarding Murphys play so far.
Glad it might finally be with us when he does. Either way, whether it's Murphy or LaFell opposite Smith, having the other as a solid 3rd option will make us a much more dangerous offense.
Once the defense begins to account by leaving single coverage on the edges both our outside options have the ability to take the top off the defense. Murphy I think is what we saw flashes of out of Gettis back in 2010, Murphy seems to be the more physical one based on what I've read, while Gettis is just slightly bigger.
If he becomes the #2 he will cost more than a 7th rounder.....though I'm sure still a very good deal.
That's what I was thinking. Lafell is good at catching in traffic, and having him running crossing routes up the middle is where I think he would shine. Probably wouldn't get the biggest stats for his career in this role (since he doesn't have much acceleration after the catch), but I think he'd be the most effective. When Smitty is ready to hang up the cleats, Gettis might be even able to slide into his role opposite Murphy (or vice versa, whoever doesn't get the role this year).

Gettis's knee might spell the end of Gettis.
Thought he was on the PUP list because of his hammy? Also,I thought I heard, he should be ready for the second week of practice.
It seems you are correct. I was under the impression that was only Norman but was wrong.
