Good decision, frees up some money and doesn't have a place since cutting/trading Beason isn't realistic with his bonus....
With Beason and Davis, I'm not sure that I agree with this...
Darin Gantt probably has a smug response about this.

Best of luck James in wherever you land, you were one of the few guys who seemed to give his all in the shitstorm that was the 2010 season and we could always count on you to be on the field.
Hurney's "core" is getting whittled away.
I sad :(

According to Spotrac, his cap hit was $4.2 million.

if this number is true it was a good move if we use this money to land a above average cb or S
Makes sense of the Panthers working out the OLB from Mizzou
It makes perfect sense. Been discussed before on here a while back. Beason's contract would have been the better one to get off the books but because of the structure it was damn near impossible. Somebody had to go and he had one of the highest cap hits and if we are moving beason to the outside he was quite expendable.

Now just go re-sign Jason Phillips for depth and I am happy.

This does not make LB a need, he was the 4th best LB on the team.

Makes me think we are targeting a free agent...

yup, I think we'll add one or two through FA and a late round draft pick.
Beason is coming off another injury and we're holding our breath every time TD make a tackle.
Have no depth behind the starting three. We'd be in trouble if one of them go down.
Yas blogged that this only frees up 200k unless they designate him a June 1 release
Not sure I agree this was a good move but I am not a GM. He was more than solid and he stayed healthy.

Interesting though...

Davis appears to be recovered, and I for one think Beasons injury's this season were overplayed as an excuse to put him on IR because he wasn't 100% from the Achilles yet.
he was scheduled to make 2.9 mil according to this

If you look at the details on his contract from rotoworld or overthecap.com we arent saving that much unless it was done as a june 1st cut.

As a normal cut that does not carry over dead money it saves 200k. If we do it as a June 1st it saves 2.3 million this year and carries over 2.1 million in dead money next year.

Gross may be next if he doesnt restructure

Gross isn't the 4th or 5th best player at his position.
He's a sam linebacker who is okay against the run and a liability against the pass. He's good blitzing around the edge, but we barely ever blitz him.

There are about 100 linebackers in this league that can do his job as well for half the pay.
He would have to be a June 1 cut then.

Would a team be able to contact and negotiate with him now, if he was a June 1 cut?

That was his base salary. Also would have earned 100k as a workout bonus taking his salary to 3 million. Add in the prorated signing bonus of 1.4 million per year and the actual cap hit was 4.4 million.

The cost to cut him was 4.2 million in dead money. We can split it over 2 years or take it all at once.
Would be lying if I said I wouldn't miss the guy. Thanks for everything James. This sucks.
Gross or Williams is next. Something will happen.

Hope Gross restructures.
Is this just me?

$7M bonus means $1.4M a year.
3 years left on the contract:
2013 base salary: $2.9M

That would mean we actually lose $1.5M against 2013 years cap?

Even if the bonus is spread over 4 years it is a $600K loss?

What am I missing?

Yes. June 1 is just a cap move for the cutting team.
Called it

I would question Gettlemen's competence if he cut Gross....will as well if Williams is on the roster at his current rate
