Terms of the deal have been not announced.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Smith played in all 16 regular season games and both playoff games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2011. He recorded 16 tackles and one interception during the regular season. Smith also contributed on special teams with six special teams tackles during the regular season and two during the postseason.
"Reggie has been on our radar since the beginning of free agency and is a player we think can come in and compete at safety," Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said. "We brought him in for a visit Tuesday and it worked out. He is another player we've added to increase the competition."

Overall Godfrey has been poo here. Godfrey doesn't have coverage skills as a S nor tackling skills......hitting hard on occasion doesn't mean you can tackle
I think Martin just regressed. New secondary coach this season will really see what's what. Martin has all the tools and his rookie year wasn't too bad. 2010 was ok too. Hopefully the other safety's light a fire under his tookus.
What seasons has he been a good tackler?people got too got up in a couple FF in 2010.
I think they are bringing in comp for both. Godfrey is bad like a good S....his play is flat out average.
Apparently we signed players who get dougie on too, that was Darius Butler getting dougied on.
I like it!
And Clowney runs in to celebrate with Edwards.
Association with all things Dougie is apparently very high on our list.
Martin was fine in 2010. Everyone outside Gamble was abused in the back 7 last year.
Martin is not in the plans for 2012.
He is on furlough this week, so he has an excuse
I think he cut them off. Looks like it on his Twitter pic at least.
He cut them recently.....
Really really like this signing, if we can score a veteran defensive tackle and another linebacker I'll be very happy. Also don't draft that Luke guy
