Panthers Pick Up S Reggie Smith

Panthers announced they signed S Reggie Smith, formerly of the 49ers.

Via Twitter Adam Caplan Darin Gantt
Terms of the deal have been not announced.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Smith played in all 16 regular season games and both playoff games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2011. He recorded 16 tackles and one interception during the regular season. Smith also contributed on special teams with six special teams tackles during the regular season and two during the postseason.
"Reggie has been on our radar since the beginning of free agency and is a player we think can come in and compete at safety," Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said. "We brought him in for a visit Tuesday and it worked out. He is another player we've added to increase the competition."

I'm interested to see if Jordan Pugh can step up and help out somewhere. He was lost in the shuffle a little bit last year after a horrible start. Lots of youth and potential there, hopefully at least two will bubble up to the top.
I still want nakamura to start
Following this signing, the official updated cap space available is now...$0.34.

Seriously though, nice signing Marty!
I think that Sherrod Martin will be moved to strong safety, Nakamura and Smith with battle it out to start at FS, and Jordan Pugh is being shown the door. Martin may suck as a free safety, but he is very good in the box.

Where does Godfrey play into this?

I'm betting there have been a few minor contract re-structures we haven't heard about yet to free up some room.

Where does Godfrey play into this?

Godfrey would start at SS. Martin would come off the bench as the 3rd safety backing up both SS and FS on game day instead of Pugh.
I called this in my Mock offseason and in our Huddle offseason.

I impress myself sometimes.

49er fans told me this guy was a ball hawk in training camp last year and was gonna be the starting FS but he got hurt and lost his job to Dashon Goldston.

I think this is a great signing, he is young, he brings some 49er defensive swagger with him, plus im confident he will beat out Sharrod Martin for the starting FS position.

With all the talent being brought in....unless he steps up this year I say Godfrey ends up on the bench.....you cant keep playing a SS who can't make an open field tackle.
Awesome.

So far Rivera has done exactly what's been needed since the season ended. After a solid draft I'll be real comfortable going into this season.

He has to beat out Nakamura too. Same kind of situation with him, played behind Ed Reed and never got a shot, but was a fan favorite and has got some skills. I'm just glad we have some young talent being added to the safety spot. Never hurts.
I believe he's formerly of the 49ers
Love this signing, can't wait to see the camp battles between Smith, Martin, and Nakamura and whoever else. Our special teams should be vastly improved next season.

One thing our secondary needs to do is force more turnovers so Cam can shove TDs down a defenses throat and put the game out of reach early.
Under the radar moves improving with better skill players....panther fans get ready for a top ten D/ST. R R has a winning formula and im 100% behind every move he makes. Just sit back and watch this guy piece together footballers who have something to prove . I susspect our attitude on defense this yr will be a pissed of panther whose protecting its new litter and BoA stadium is its den. Dont come creeping cause its gonna suck for you.
I am more excited about the moves we have made this offseason than I have been in quite some time. Methodically, they're putting together a contender.

Can't wait for the draft.
I'm excited more than anything that they know there is a problem at S and are bringing in multiple players to try to mitigate the problem and create a choice there.

I feel more secure about our offseason so far this year than I have in a while because, despite the fact that I don't have a huge name to tout about when I brag to my friends, I feel like we are approaching the process intelligently.

Remains to be seen what we do in the draft but I'm not sure we could have done that much better with the cap space we had this year and still been able to draft.
Every one of these signings feels like just that -methodical. Seems like the FO is signing players who are in the same boat as the whole team -ready to blowup... Almost everybody can see it, this team is fixin to take over. Our O was top 10, dont see that slippin much. Addressin D & ST to get them to top 10 status, its going to be a lot of fun watchin this season. I thought 05 & 08 felt special before the season, this is insane...Spent alot of time fuggin, now its time for the money shot...
Nakamura sucks, and is only special teams depth. Come on.
Love it. Safety is definitely going to be the position battle royale at camp this year.

Rivera said last year that he would eventually like to see Martin at CB....I think he even said it might not be immediate but that was what he wanted in time.

never heard of the guy before now
Hey guys, 49ers fan here and I just want to clear a couple of things up.

He was only going to be our starting free safety going into the season because we hadn't re-signed Dashon Goldson yet. Once Goldson signed, it took him some time to learn Vic Fangio's new defense and once he was ready Reggie was benched. It wasn't like he was beating out Goldson for the job. He's not that good.

The guy is below average in both pass and run coverage. His only real contribution to the 49ers was the occasional tackle on defense and a few stand out tackles on special teams. He does "The Dougie" better than he plays football.

Anytime Dashon Goldson or Donte Whitner were injured I would cringe knowing that Reggie Smith would have to come in the game. And I'm not in the minority here, go check out the 49ers forums thread about him signing with you guys.

Just wanted to inform you, from someone who has had to watch this dude for the past few seasons. Don't get too excited about this guy, he'll only disappoint you.
Meh. Hes a panther now so hes an all pro probowler in my mind.
So, Martin is pretty much gone?
