Round 1: Carolina Panthers Select Star Lotulelei

Apr 24 2013 06:24 AM Zod Carolina Panthers
With their first pick in the 2013 Draft the Carolina Panthers select Star Lotulelei

Rarely does a player come along who so thoroughly dominates his competition that he generates buzz across the entire nation despite posting only average statistics and playing in a relatively small media market. That is precisely what 6-3, 318-pound defensive tackle Star Lotulelei accomplished for Utah.
Recognized by Pac-12 offensive linemen as the best defensive lineman in the conference with the Morris Trophy in 2011, Lotulelei posted 44 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks despite facing consistent double- and even occasional triple-team blocks in 2011.
He battled through the same level of attention from defensive coordinators in 2012, and still earned his second selection to the All-Pac-12 first team. He finished the regular season with a team-high 11 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks to go along with four pass breakups, four fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles.
Lotulelei, who was born in Tonga, is married with a daughter. He prepped at Bingham High School in South Jordan, where he was part of a state championship team.
He then spent two years at Snow College, racking up 52 tackles, 14 for losses, three sacks and a forced fumble in 2008. He attended Snow again in 2009, but did not play football before transferring to Utah.
Lotulelei's once rock-solid status as a top half of the first round selection took a major hit when his medical check at the Scouting Combine revealed a heart issue. He immediately returned home and began undergoing a battery of tests from doctors. Rob Rang reported in early April that Lotulelei had passed the "gold standard" of heart tests, but many teams are likely to remove him from their draft boards nonetheless.

It was once again worth staying up all night to watch the 1st round here in Germany. We were lucky he fell to us, great stuff. Let`s hope we nail the 44 as well, I am thinking CB now as the bigger need than WR. But would be happy with either one, just take the best avaiable CB or WR!

The pick will be a DB, Rivera has already stated its a defensive player.

And as far as needs go, S > CB.

Wouldnt mind Blidi Wreh-wilson from Uconn

he didn't state it was going to be a defensive player. that was person talking out of his ass. he doesn't know.

all he said was there was something in common with star and it could be any number of things.

same here, but there are a slew of guys i would like there.

cyprien, phillip thomas, jonathan banks, justin hunter, keenan allen, quinton patton, jesse williams, kawaan short, zack ertz, gavin escobar...man there's a ton of talent out there still. i love it.

I wanna hear Steve Smith's opinion on this pick.
The last time I heard from Smitty was him wanting Sheldon Richardson. How does he feel about a Utes product falling into our lap? Bet he's pretty happy.
It's morning now...

No, it wasn't a dream. Star really did fall into our lap last night.

TO be honest, I had the edit screen pulled up with his name typed in since this morning.

Can you please do that with Justin Hunter today?

He was on the Drive last night as I was driving to a friends place and he was extremely happy about the idea of adding Star. Didn't think it would happen, but really wanted it....
ANother thing that is great about grabbing star was that it debunked the debate from last season. Remember when everyone was bitching about winning at the end of the season, because we wont get a good draft pick? That is proven to be loser talk! Im always saying just win baby. Its the GM's job to find great value no matter where you pick! The only time you should tank a season is to get the #1 overall pick for a 10-15 yr franchise qb
Wreh-Wilson would be an amazing pick-up, day one starter. Cyprien, if he's there, would also be an amazing pick up.
The Stars were alligned tonite. We made a wish upon a Star . The G-man had a Star in is eyes.
Wow.

Honestly I didn't think he would be there. I have been ragging on the franchise for not solidifying the middle of the D Line for a while now.

This was the only player that I would have traded up for, outside of the LT's. Great great pick.
Audio interview from the team site (link)

He gets tickled after someone corrects him for mispronouncing "Kuechly"

just a question........wouldn't Wilson be a hugh reach at 44?
Still can't believe we got Star.

Yep he's a early to late third round prospect...
Greg Hardy on Star via Twitter: "Okay Ill answer the Star question but this is the last time he will be called Star by me lol. I'm excited to see what he is about like I said draft round doesn't matter as long as he's got heart and the willingness to listen and dominate at all costs he will fit in because we have developed a way of life on this defense that I am proud of and that has proven to be effective."

music to my ears........
Super pumped! Been watching Star highlights all day long
It is still hard for me to believe that the Jets took Richardson ahead of Floyd and Star. I would have never guess we would get to pick between the two of them. The Jets are a curious bunch anyway but that was really strange.
