Shula vs Quinn - A matchup of first year coordinators

Sep 01 2013 02:13 PM Zod Carolina Panthers
One thing not being discussed is the fact that first year Panthers Offensive Coordinator Mike Shula will be going up against first year Seahawks Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn.

The Seahawks had much defensive success last season under Gus Bradley, now head coach of the Jaguars.

Seahawk fans seem to think it is a forgone conclusion that no drop in play will be experienced on defense. However, it is highly probable that losing a top tier defensive coordinator will indeed have an effect.

This coaching matchup is a huge question mark. No one really knows how effective either will be in their new role.

Maybe they should ask the Saints how they did when they lost a few coaches....

The Jags hired Del Rio after having the best defense we ever had. We did in deed drop in the rankings the next year even under a defensive minded head coach.

I think we'll be okay if Shula doesn't shoot himself in the foot by trying to make things too complicated or fancy. With the weapons he will have at his disposal, I think he'll be just fine - assuming the line can hold up.

Shula coached the greatest team ever when he was with the dolphins

Sent from my SCH-I545 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

Quinn has coached D line in the NFL.........last year was DC for the Gators. 2 years as college DC.

Hopefully he is in for a learning experience,

Why isn't this being talked about more
So it will be the tale of which coordinator screws up less? I only saw one Seattle game this preseason and he defense looked as advertised. Shula may go conservative or he may become innovative. there is no reason for him not to use the running game. I hope he does.

that would require taking at least one of the t3b0w segments off of espn's ticker

I forgot about that. Definitely will be a factor, but that defense still has a lot of talent.
If we come out throwing and keeping the Seahawks off balance we can dictate the pace of the game. Try and get some three and outs on defense. I think if we play our brand of football on both sides of the ball we will be in the game at the end. Only this year I believe Cam will make the throw and the defense will hold.

What? A point of weakness in the Seahawks impenetrable armor? The players the Seahawks have on D are incapable of failure needing no coaching whatsoever. You and I could walk on to the field with an inflatable Motorola headset and pretend to call defensive plays and they would still be the greatest of all time. We are dealing with demigods here, DEMIGODS I TELL YOU!!!

Why would anything slightly negative be talked about with the anointed ones?

The media has their story line and will run with it.
In addition Clemons lead the Hawks last year with 11.5 sacks and Irvin was second with 8.

neither will be avaliable week 1. That would be like us entering the game without CJ and Hardy and thinking our D would be fierce.

So the first year DC won't have a big chunk of what made them go last year

Was not aware of that.

Things are looking like a Panthers upset. We are currently 3 point dogs.

CRA, this is my favorite post you've ever made. I feel a slight kinship with you now. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh, don't ruin it.

Yep Irvin sacked Cam twice last year and Clemons got to him once. Wagner had the only other sack against us that day.

However they do have Michael Bennett who sacked cam once per game vs the Bucs last year. Also Cliff Avril is no slouch either.

Shula will suprise! Haters beware...

... He will blindside you and knock your block off with a creative and effective offense. # panthers be husllin' this pre-season

Was not aware of that.

Clemons is injured and Irvin will be serving a suspension.

Seattle has been hyped into this unstoppable machine that the media has completely disregarded who will be on the field. They were the bulk of the Hawks damage to opposing QBs.

I am probably a little more worried about our O than they are about their D.

I think this will be a close game with some serious D's going at it.

I think we win IF...

Shula can come up with an attack that doesn't involve stubbornly running Williams to nowhere and forcing it to Smith.

If his gameplay put an emphasis on Olsen, LaFell and getting some others creatively involved? Yes. Oh, and telling Cam to run we he has the chance. Get those easy chuck yards instead of sitting too long in the pocket.

Big if though....could easily see us 3rd and long routinely as Williams gets blown up trying to run behind this OL and Cam forcing it to Smitty covered by Sherman

I was thinking that Olsen needs to be leaned on heavily.  Can anyone remember if they were able to cover the TE's much last season?

Hoping that Shula can be a little creative, but not go full Chud like the first part of last year.

Hoping to see some boot's, waggles, designed runs from cam...

Olsen was forgotten last matchup....Cam was too focused on Smith who wasnt even trying to run routes often instead wanted to wrestle

Was not aware of that.

Yup they are hurt, great for us.

Also- a 3 point spread is pretty respectable for us. I feel good about this game. Week 1 at home, insane defense, great WR options (more than we have had since moose) and a ST that looks capable.

Sunday will be fun!
