Kelvin Benjamin - The Right Pick

May 09 2014 05:17 AM Zod Carolina Panthers
David Gettleman and the Carolina Panthers got it right.

Kelvin Benjamin was both the best player available and also filled a huge need at wide receiver. And when I say huge, I mean that literally.

Benjamin instantly becomes for the Panthers what we all hoped Brandon Lafell would turn out to be. A tough jump ball receiver that we could rely on in the red zone in addition to tough third down passes. Benjamin won't be burning many players with his speed, but has a fantastic ability to extend his body and make the catch.

The most important thing: He has all of the physical tools that cannot be taught.

The challenge now is for wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl to mold this young man into a formidable NFL caliber receiver. Proehl, who up until now has had only marginal young talent to develop now gets the keys to a Ferrari. I doubt there is anyone more excited at Bank of America Stadium this morning than Ricky.

Under Proehl's tutelage, Benjamin will develop into that safety outlet that Cam has never had. A guy that Cam can throw the ball high and in the general direction of when under pressure and know there is a good chance Kelvin has got it.

The Moose to Cam's Jake.

If Benjamin can improve on his focus (3 drops vs Florida) and his route running, he will have an immediate positive impact this season for the Panthers. This is exactly what the Panthers needed with their first rounder.

Well done.

I agree 100%. We need a massive possession receiver and Kb is it. Now if we can nail a formidable #2 or a solid dback day two id say were in phenomenal shape.

I agree! KB was the pick I wanted. I didn't know too much about the other prospects but I did have a chance to watch him play. I am definitely starting to trust DG more and more. I'm proud to have this kid on my team.
Another thread on Benjamin.

Do we need 18 threads on how he's the right pick?

Well you'd think his comments would be welcomed just as easily if he posted it in one of the other threads, IMO. I'll leave it at that
Love this pick and has been the guy I've mentioned at lunch conversations. Likey

nice to you being reasonable about it zod even though lee/cooks were probably your favorites.

Very good pick for sure!

Truthfully, I forgot how massive this kid is 6'5 240.  Red zone target and playmaker acquired.

QB-6'5 245 to WR-6'5 240

We've got two cats that won their teams title games in college.  Cool stuff.

We can buy a seat warmer from Walmart for a lot cheaper than $5.5 million.

I'd say he is more Hummer than Ferrari.....which is fine by me.

He made up for those three drops against UF by catching three touchdowns.

Everyone knew in the NC game that FSU was going to him....and he delivered. Good enough for me.

Calvin Johnson - Megatron

Kelvin Benjamin - Optimus Prime

:-)

Get him on the Jugs machine with Olsen.  I hope we get real creative with him.  Use him like a Tony Gonzalez and just let him box dudes out. He is a matchup nightmare.

Makes a good point, KB is gonna have to watch his weight. Getting all that money and free time could see him put on an extra 10-20 if he aint careful.

Not even in the same league. But few are.

I will gladly throw away everyting I've said draft wise previously.  Give me some ketchup or something for whatever crow you need me to eat.

I am extrmely excited right now (post draft glow?).  Dude has some serious skills, some serious rough spots, but the potential to become something really great here.  Someone in another thread said this was a Ricky Prohel pick.  Like this is his litmis test as a coach.  Considering how Prohel was really instrumental to Smith's development (from what Smith said), I have confidence in this selection.

Do we still need tackles?  Oh yeah.  A CB?  That two.  But we have a BIG target for Cam who can be a redzone guy early, and hopefully develop into a very good player for us in the future.

If Gettleman belives that KB will make us better, then in Getts I trust!

calling it now: BUST

ditto. I absolutely hate this pick. He's too big.

He can't be any worse than the last 6'5 WR we drafted

You two are starting to become the most annoying posters on this board (at least in the last week or so)

Looking back there is no one else I would have been excited about drafting there, if Gettleman wasn't high on Lee that's enough for me to stay the fug away from a USC receiver
