Tyler Gaffney Panthers Comparison

May 11 2014 06:32 AM Zod Carolina Panthers
If I had to choose a Panthers player form the pat to compare Tyler Gaffney to, I would have to go with Stephen Davis. In addition to having nearly the same size, they appear to have the same game as well.

The Similarities:
  • Both just over 6 foot.
  • Both around 220ish
  • Both have shorter strides while running. Davis learned to run lower in the NFL, Gaffney hopefully will as well.
  • Both are more straight forward runners, have limited shiftiness, and aren't afraid of contact.
  • Both have the patience to let their blocks develop and follow them well.
  • Stephen Davis selected in the 4th in 1996. That might translate today to the 7th or even an UDFA. Gaffney of course drafted in the 6th.

He's the power back with Barner being the scat back. Clearly Gettleman wants replacements ready to go when they part ways with double trouble.
I'm more excited about the Darrin Reaves signing tbh

This.  With a little more speed.

so is barner cut? or other? seems NO room unless a injury happens. before the draft, ive even heard mike zordich was making the team. plus the numbers at TE dont help either(over full). i did read a few sites had a 4th round grade on him(meh).

I forget which press conference it was in, buttle gettlemen referred to this guy before he was drafted.  said that a RB that can pick up blitzes is very rare.

One of my personal all-time favorite Panthers.
Patience to allow his blocks to develop or not fast enough to outrun them?

Scat back, possibly a replacement for Barner?

Im just going to stay quiet and trust the plan. Its too late to not buy in, we're along for the ride.

I'm not so sure I see the quickness from Reeves to be a scat back. When watching Reaves, first thing you notice is that hes a super patient runner. Reaves is a tweener, has power back qualities but lacks size, and like I said I don't think he's explosive enough to be a home run hitter type back.

Barner's job to lose imo. My hope is that Barner hit the weight room this offseason and added 10 pounds or so.

If Barner plays great in camp and preseason, this guy is on the practice squad.

Not bad.

I wonder how Nick Goings is doing

Who thought Scat back was a good title -_-

I feel your optimism but I don't know if 10 pounds of muscle is enought to help Barner. He looked good in preseason but he really got blown up in his limited opportunities to play. Looked like a rag doll equivalent to RGIII running the ball.

Wasted pick.  Gaffney wouldn't have lasted two seconds had he played in the SEC.  In the NFL?  Please.  Gaffney was a system back for the Stanford Cardinals.  Just about all of the their runners succeed in that system, but they haven't done diddly in the NFL.

yep totally agree, he reminds me of Davis

won't lie I initially was upset with this pick just due to position, but man did this guy have a beastly year last year. I like his athleticism and he will provide great insurance when Stew goes down

Ran like a 4.40 so pretty quick i liked this pick

I thought he ran sort of like Stew in his highlights. Not quite as explosive but the ferocity is there. I can see the Davis comparison.

I agree with your point, but I think Davis had more speed than Gaffney.

I wonder if we are going to give up on the Brandon Williams experiment and permanently move Brockel as the #3 TE and have Gaffney as the backup to Tolbert. NFL.com says he is very solid in pass protection.

Not giving up hope huh?
