Carolina Panthers Select Luke Kuechly

Apr 26 2012 03:30 PM Zod Carolina Panthers
LB - Boston College

Read & React: Intelligent player who knows his keys and "feels" his way to the ball. Aggressiveness allows him to be fooled by those keys, like pulling guards, on misdirection and takes a false step forward on play action, but also recovers well and regularly sniffs out reverses and other trick plays to prevent big gains. Run defense: Constantly around the ball, fights traffic easily and steps into gaps instead of waiting for the ballcarriers. Tracks the ball to either sideline but needs perfect angles to beat NFL tailbacks to perimeter. Anchors and can stick bigger backs with lowered pads. Doesn't have elite size to stand up to NFL-caliber linemen, but regularly rips off blocks with strong hands and can make

plays even if initially knocked backward

Summary: Luke Kuechly has been one of the most productive players in college football, at any position, over the past two seasons. He set ACC and school records for career tackle totals with 532 stops. Even without a bowl game in 2011, he made 191 tackles with 12 tackles for a loss, three passes broken up and three interceptions. In 2010, Kuechly had 183 tackles (110 solo) with 10.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three interceptions.

Kuechly admittedly lacks special foot speed, but he makes up for it in instincts and intelligence. There is no doubt that he is a fabulous run defender who produces good down-and-distance situations for his defense. His read and reaction skills are top-notch. That allows him to get in position to make tackles near the line of scrimmage. Routinely, one would see Kuechly shed a block and make a tackle for a short gain.

Kuechly is extremely sound in pass defense. He does very well in zone coverage and is adept at reading quarterbacks' eyes. Kuechly has enough speed to get deep in his drops and cover more ground than one might think. While he was rarely called on to blitz, he showed some quality blitzing skills in limited opportunities.

Kuechly looks like one of the safest picks in the 2012 NFL Draft. He should be able to play immediately in the NFL, and before long, he could be one of the better run-defending linebackers in the NFL. Kuechly has the ability to play in a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense. Adding weight to help him fight off NFL blockers would be a good idea, especially if he were in a 3-4.

It's true. He will be on the bench unless Davis goes down again.
And what's up with our top 10 pick not being in the green room? Are we the only team to this point that didn't hand out a jersey?

No
I really like this guy....very good pick!!!!!!!
We can still get a good DT or CB in the 2nd round. This now gives us a very good LB core and gives us insurance incase Beason doesnt come back healthy. Was a little stunned when this pick was made but was the best defender on the board and now go get Jenkins or Worthy and we are much improved on defense.

Kuechly isn't there.
Our LB corp is sick now. Even if Davis comes back he wont have to play right away or Anderson can come off the bench. Either way its a smart move there are plenty of good Dlinemen that will be left.
Hurney doesn't miss in the first, hope Jenkins end his streak of failures in the 2nd :D
Just going off the OP..it said Kuechly lacked ELITE size to go against NFL lineman with very good coverage skillls..sounds like OLB to me. Perfect idea for defending TE's (like someone already pointed out). To me it seems like a Davis replacement.

No

Yes. We run 4-3
I love it.
Unpopular opinion alert: I think DE is a bigger need than DT.

They made sure no one holds up number 1 except :cam:
This kid is an amazing pick for us and NO he will not be sitting on the bench period. He is one of the best coverage LB's to come out, one of the best tacklers I have seen come out period. We just got a probowler
Why do people think he's going to be on the bench? Anderson is the odd man out in this situation.

Yes. We run 4-3

John Fox coaches for Denver now. They also have Peyton Manning now too
I like the pick. He is solid and can be impactful quickly.

I don't see why. Enlighten us
Lol it's safe and he'll play well you're crazy to not get a good feeling from this.

I gotta get my mind right about this kid.

I fell better now. Go get 'em Luke!

Like I said before, I hope this pick means Davis is on his way out. I am going to be pissed if our first rounder is on the bench because we have too much hope in a guy we should've dropped this offseason.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything but hoping that Davis is on the way out before he or the team makes that decision is a crappy way to think.
I really hope Worthy is there in the second. Otherwise, best corner available.
