First Impressions: Dave Gettleman

Jan 15 2013 12:06 PM Mr. Scot Carolina Panthers
For those who watched the press conference (or those who will watch it later) what do you see/hear?

Here's the link for those who didn't see it.

Dave Gettleman: It's about getting it right

Like the fact that he thinks our size is an issue...I'd agree with him. I wouldn't be surprised if we cut Beason and try to get bigger along the front seven...the giants have a huge front seven. Obviously the OL needs to get bigger first.

I've been saying for years our lbs have been undersized

Luke fortunately has the frame to get bigger. Davis is alright for now at 240. As for the others, well let's just wait and see what he does

I love Bo

But flaunting that shitt at a press conference is JR being JR

Like the man is going to bring in a 'Mickey D's " cup with his holdings in BO's...haters going to find something to hate.

You flaunt a new car.

You flaunt a Louis Vuitton bag.

You flaunt some new Jordan's.

You don't flaunt sweet tea from a fast food joint. You carry it with you everywhere because you genuinely LOVE that poo.

He said in the presser that "Ron would tell you I'm pretty direct".

I get the definite impression he's given him a "here's where you stand" speech.

It seemed to work with Coughlin
The video won't load for me :(

I get the feeling that his age was a plus--he has the same sense of desperation JR has.

He mentioned the components of winning football games, (in addition to your "big men" quote): QB, TD makers, Pass rush.

Gettlemen said that we have pieces. That is right. Marty hoped these pieces would win for you if you paid them enough. Thank Marty for our situation at DE, QB, C, LB and TE. Blame him for problems at RB (cap), CB, DT, RG, WR and S (bad drafting or neglect).

Marty paid top dollar to reward our free agents and went bottom fishing for others. Gettlemen seems to have an expertise in free agency. He mentioned the flat cap and one-year contracts-no long term committments for quick fixes (see Hurney, 2010-2012). He seems to understand the market. He does not want to overpay. Marty thought he had to overpay to keep players here.

Rosters are liquid. You check the waiver wire and take players from other teams' practice squads. If you are not building a program from the bottom up, you are not building a program.
----Yes, he said that. Great to hear from a fan of a team with little depth and the biggest IR in the league for several years running.

Just think back to how the Giants handled Osi Unmenyuria. He begged for a big deal and they told him to play or watch JPP.
holy crap! he sounds just like don corleone.

when he was talking about his mother in law's opinion of him and chocked up i swear when he said "what you see is what you get" i thought i was looking at robert deniro.

The video won't load for me :(

I always have to pause my adblocker to get their videos to load.
There is absolutely no way you could convince me the Bojangles thing is coincidental. The old man is trolling.
Has anyone posted this on youtube yet? Stupid Panthers.com videos don't work for me for some reason.

not trolling so much as clever product placement

That fixed it, thanks!

Thanks man. That worked for me to. I wonder why tho. I've never had that problem on any other site.
Did I miss something during the presser ? On NFL.com they said Dave Gettleman laughed about our cap situation. I didn't see what that writer saw.
I haven't read through the thread, but has anyone gave it to JR yet for potshotting the media during the intro? Wow, low blow.

they've done it to him. they deserve much worse than what JR threw at them.

One important factor to me: He stated that the evaluation and roster decision process has to be "unemotional" and "not sentimental".

Welcome words.

Agreed... This is the BEST part! The guy is objective and accepts reality... If nothing else those statements alone give us great hope for the future!

I'm not taking sides, I'm just saying it doesn't seem like the ideal time to strike back, lol.
He seems like a very down to earth guy with a good sense of humor.

I love the fact that we finally have a GM with a significant background in player evaluation... he said when it comes right down to it he'll pick up the clicker and watch film to aid in decision making.
Like what I see/hear. I just hope he is given full autonomy as the decision maker in regards to the personnel.

Did you miss me guys?

Silence.

Did you miss me?

Muffled laughs.

Tom, did you miss me?

Muffled laugh from Tom.

Tom......did you miss me?

Awkward.

yes--great example. Gettlemen (in my opinion) made a few comments that were directed at hurney's style of managment. He mentioned the word "objective" when evaluating personnel. I think Marty because disoriented by loyalty to players which caused him to pay them for past performance.

I bet he throws up when he looks at the contracts in the books.

Hardy could be his first test.
Gettleman seems to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder from having been passed over for gm consideration in years past.

I like that chip.
Wow, he even teared up talking about his deceased mother-in-law. This dude is awesome.
