The luxurious amount of cap space the Carolina Panthers once enjoyed has been spent faster than Cam Newton at a designer shoe sale. By the looks of things, the Panthers may be done with major free agent signings this year.
According to the NFLPA Daily report, the Carolina Panthers have around 15 million in cap space left. However, this number may not include complete information from recent contracts signed. Many calculate the cap space for the Panthers currently at around 12 million and change.
12 million sounds like a lot of cash, but in the NFL it really isn’t. For the Carolina Panthers, this is especially true. Not only do the Panthers have a high draft pick to sign, they also have a couple of their own players that are due for contract extensions.
Guards Trai Turner and Andrew Norwell both become unrestricted free agents in 2018. Turner has developed into a pro bowl player while Norwell has become one of the better guards in the league. The Panthers cannot afford to let either of these two players test the free agency market next year. If they do, both will likely be gone. I suspect both will be extended by the start of the season.
As such, if you are hoping for another big name free agency splash this year, prepare for disappointment.
