Carolina Panthers select McCaffrey at eight? Could it be?

carolina panthers christian mccaffrey

The latest buzz in the Carolina Panthers rumor mill is their love of Christian McCaffrey. So much so, in fact, that the Panthers will certainly select him with the eighth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. So what to make of this, could it actually happen?

Well, yes, it could. Is it likely? That is an entirely different question.

I can tell you that the Panthers indeed are impressed with McCaffrey and would like to see him in Carolina, but he would not be their first choice with the eighth overall selection. In fact, he isn’t the second or even third choice. But what if no teams ahead of the Panthers select a quarterback and all preferred selections are off the board? Well, yes, in this case I concede that drafting McCaffrey is possible. After all, McCaffrey would fill many needs on the field from running back, to slot receiver, to kick returner. Although he is considered a “situational” running back by most, there are an abundance of situations in which he would be on the field. Looking at the big picture, that is all that matters isn’t it?

Over a month ago a pontificated a situation where the Carolina Panthers could draft Christian McCaffrey, but not with the eight pick overall in the draft. I still think that is a possibility. I suspect the Panthers would be much happier with McCaffrey later in the first round and not at pick eight.

I’m personally leaning towards wanting Fournette or Adams myself. If they aren’t available and panthers do select McCaffrey…. he is going to be every bit as popular as Luke around the Carolina’s

I think he could be a big asset to the team because of his versatility. My only concern would be if Shula would use him effectively. He could be really dangerous in the right offensive scheme.

Our defense should be better next year with the new additions and maturation of the younger players. The Panthers need help on offense. We could really use an all purpose weapon for Cam. CM can carry the rock, catch, and run back kicks. I wouldn’t be opposed to his selection at all.

Would be an absolute over draft in my opinion. Guy is nothing more than a glorified Danny Woodhead in the NFL, sure productive in college but it’s a completely different game. Would hate to see us reach on a guy like this at 8 and would honestly rather see us trade the pick for Sherman before drafting McCaffrey. Can’t even imagine DG passing on a guy like Hooker, Adams, or Lattimore to go with McCaffrey. Please please do not draft McCaffrey at 8! Side note: I know this is a conflicting topic among many, but my view is that this kid quit his college team to chase money, what does that at about his character? 4 year starter and team captain quits the team to avoid injury with one game left. A Stanford player who showed a lot more heart (actually playing in the bowl game against UNC): Solomon Thomas. Would love to see him sitting there at 8. Just praying we don’t waste a top 10 pick on Danny Woodhead 2.0….

If you watch the Guys highlight tape you see he has tremendous vision and patience to hit the right gap everytime. The difference in him versus Leonard Fournet is fournet lacks the willingness to allow the blocks to develop and being patient to turn on the jets once the blocks establish. Although fournet can get into the second level and reak havoc for smaller secondary players and a top gear to burst past most defenders he will try to over power bigger defensive line men at the line of scrimmage. As evidenced by this past season, how long will he be able to keep that up in the NFL? Christian McCafferty already possesses the skills and patience to allow blocks to set up and possesses good hips and cuts that can allow to make defenders miss limiting the hits he takes and creating more space to turn on the jets and get into the second level. Add all of that to the fact that he can catch passes and punt returns, and you have a jack of all trades player who our Offensive coordinator will have a hayday with. Would I like to see us trade back several picks and gain a few picks along with McCafferty, of course! If we got extra picks and McCafferty then not only do we have the RB of the future but also a few more developmental players too for the future to be groomed under our current roster vets. So McCafferty at pick 12-15 wouldn’t be too bad a deal
