Carolina Panthers GM Marty Hurney has received a lot of flack from fans throughout his tenure, and has deserved much of it. But not enough is being said about how Hurney has focused in one area that was desperately needed. Namely, giving Cam Newton the tools needed at wide receiver to succeed.
Last year, Dave Gettleman’s signature wide receiver acquisition was a Tampa Bay Buccaneers castoff. Although he had great potential, Russell Shepard had yet to produce on offense in the NFL. It was a gamble, something Gettleman loved to do with relatively inexpensive players. Little risk, high reward. Unfortunately,it isn’t always a good gamble. Shepard is no longer skilled enough to be on the Carolina Panthers roster according to several reports. Bad news for Shepard, great news for Cam Newton.
Gone are the days of below average wide receiver making a home on the Carolina Panthers roster and actually seeing playing time.
The addition of Torrey Smith and DJ Moore to the roster has greatly increased the worth of the unit as a whole. Together with Devin Funchess, those three top receivers are not in the bottom third of the league. That is something the Carolina Panthers have not seen in many, many seasons.
Also, lets not overlook the huge upgrade at offensive coordinator that Hurney has provided the franchise. For the first time in a long time, Carolina Panthers fans no longer have to end any high scoring dreams with the phrase “but Shula”.Agree? Disagree?
