So there is a lot of chatter these days within the Carolina Panthers fan community and the poor showing of left tackle Matt Kalil. To make matters worse, Kalil is now injured and not practicing with the team. As such, panic has started to set in. Understandable, to be sure.
I am here to tell you the answer is likely on the roster, but not exactly in the way that you may be thinking.
For many years now, Carolina Panthers fans have grown accustomed to long, drawn out, ineffective play design and play calling. Former offensive coordinator Mike Shula was even slow getting the plays called into the quarterback. Slow was the name of the game, and it resulted in a whole lot of pressure on Cam Newton in the pocket.
Now that Norv Turner is offensive coordinator, slow is no longer in style. Suddenly the Carolina Panthers find themselves in a position of real speed.
Curtis Samuel, DJ Moore, and Christian McCaffrey. Three names that will completely transform the Panthers offense this season. Cam Newton will no longer need to hold on to the ball for a full five seconds while a lumbering wide receiver clods downfield trying to get open. Newton will have the opportunity to throw much sooner, and in doing so take far less damage in the pocket.
Would a legitimate left tackle sure make things easier? Sure. But I am confident (for now) that Norv Turner is capable of doing something Mike Shula was never capable of. Namely, game planning around team strengths and not trying to make a square peg fit into a round hole.
So you can expect a much faster paced offense this year, and as a result a healthier, happier Cam Newton.Agree? Disagree? You can sound off right here with thousands of Carolina Panthers fans.
