Today the New York Giants visit Bank of America to take on the Carolina Panthers. The 1-3 Giants are not a good football team, but a win in the NFL is never a sure thing. Jerry Richardson’s Carolina Panthers would likely play to the level of the competition and possibly even lose a game like today’s. Now that David Tepper is owner and a renewed emphasis on winning has been put in place will a killer instinct develop? Possibly.
All signs today point towards a heavy dose of ground game from the Carolina Panthers. And why not, they currently have the number one ranked rushing offense in the league. The duo of Newton and McCaffrey is as lethal a running threat as there is in the entire league. The New York Giants struggle against the run, currently ranking 29th. All the more reason to run, run, and run it again.
The Giants’ pass defense is much more formidable, ranking 9th in the league. I would love to see the run game open up a play action pass and a long reception by Curtis Samuel as the result. Samuel needs a good showing today to help establish himself as a player that can stay on the field.
The Carolina Panthers should be able to keep the Giants under 20 points today. The addition of Eric Reid means teams no longer have an entire half of a field to target with little concern. Reid presence alone throws a monkey wrench in what opposing offenses would like to do against the Panthers.
Rookie corner Donte Jackson is having a solid season and now could see the opportunity to line up against one of the league best receivers in Odell Beckham Jr. Has Jackson developed enough confidence in his pro game to talk trash to OBJ? God I hope so. That in itself will be as entertaining as the rest of the game. Can’t wait.
I am 3 for 3 this season in my predictions. Let us hope that trend continues.
Carolina Panthers – 34
New York Giants – 12
