And so we begin the second quarter of the NFL season with the Carolina Panthers visiting the Washington Redskins. It seems the Redskins have two owners, Dan Snyder and Cam Newton. Newton is undefeated against the Redskins, but will that trend continue? Here is my prediction for this week.
The return of Greg Olsen for the Carolina Panthers should give a huge boost the Cam Newton and the offense. We saw last week first hand how an even talented rookie like Ian Thomas can still make costly mistakes. Olsen would not have run that indecisive route that led to an interception. Olsen’s return is actually a great thing for Thomas, allowing the rookie tight end to concentrate on a smaller number of responsibilities and continue to develop.
The Washington Redskins defense ranks 5th in the league, which is nothing to sneeze at. The only good news here is that they are also tied with the Carolina Panthers for 24th in sacks. Cam Newton should have a relatively clean jersey this game. When that happens the Panthers always have a chance to win.
Thomas Davis is back and will immediately bring a boost of energy to the defense. If Luke Kuechly is the brains of the defense, then Thomas Davis is the heart. Heart is exactly what has been missing at times, so I Davis’ return as more than just X’s and O’s. It is the return of an identity and an attitude.
The Redskins are hurt on offense. Not only is Adrian Peterson banged up, but they are struggling to find a healthy wide receiver. Jamison Crowder did not practice all week and Paul Richardson only practiced in a limited capacity on Friday. Running back Chris Thompson is a frequent target in their passing game but even he was limited in practice all week. The Carolina Panthers are facing a depleted Washington Redskin offense and they had better capitalize.
I see too much going in the Carolina Panthers favor this week to pick against them. The cats will get an early lead, squander it, then spend the entire fourth quarter trying to hold on to a victory. Sound familiar?
