Let me be quite honest here. When the Carolina Panthers take the field against the Philadelphia Eagles today, I have no earthly idea which Carolina Panthers team will actually show up. Yet the Panthers are 3-2 and very much in the postseason hunt. This may be the most confusing season as of yet and that is saying something. Here is my best guess as to how the game will shake out today.
The Carolina Panthers currently have the fourth ranked rushing attack in the league. Christian McCaffrey and Cam Newton have proven to be a formidable duo on the ground. Heck, they are so good the Panthers have kept a thousand yard rusher on the bench. It remains a mystery why we have not seen CJ Anderson in short yardage situations.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, the Philadelphia Eagles have the second best run defense in the NFL. If they can take away the Panthers run game early things could get ugly. I mean 2014 the game is over in the first quarter ugly. Let us hope this is not the case.
More bad news. Carson Wentz is having a great year as his 103 passer rating indicates. Wentz has thrown only one interception this year which isn’t great for the Carolina Panthers already soft defensive secondary. Throw in the fact that the Panthers can rarely pressure a quarterback and well, you get the picture. As I said earlier, if the Panthers cannot run the ball and keep Wentz off the field it will be a sure loss for the cats, and perhaps an embarrassing one.
The only hope here is that the Carolina Panthers finally put together a complete game, something we have not seen in 2018. It will take solid work from all three phases just to stay in this match today. Unfortunately, the Panthers have not shown me they are capable of this. I have to assume they won’t.
My heart is hoping for a Carolina victory, but my brain is saying it just won’t happen.
