If you ask any average Joe on the street what the top needs of the Carolina Panthers are in the NFL draft, he or she would surely list safety in the top 3. Although the Panthers have two veterans to start this season, they aren’t exactly the picture of long term stability. Behind their starters is no one capable of starting a game if needed. 2018 third round pick Gaulden has not impressed and may be moved to nickel this season. A safety is needed, and a safety they shall have.
One prospect the Carolina Panthers have shown real interest in is Darnell Savage out of Maryland. “The New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers are showing a lot of interest in Savage, who will be a top-75 choice.”
As opposed to the Gaulden pick last year, Savage is a true free safety. This would be a refreshing change of strategy, drafting players who play a specific position. I like that in a prospect. Savage, who ran a 4.36 40 yard dash, has the speed to cover the field against some of the fastest NFC South receivers. Imagine the speed of both Donte Jackson and Darnell Savage in coverage together. Be still my beating heart.
Although Sabage may be a reach for the Carolina Panthers in the second round, I would not put it past Marty Hurney to select him. Donte Jackson was a bit of a reach for the Panthers last year, but that could not have turned out any better. Perhaps lightning will strike twice for Marty Hurney in the second round.Agree? Disagree?
