With Cam Newton’s future in doubt for the Carolina Panthers, one has to start imagining where he may end up. One possible place would be the stuff of nightmares for Carolina Panthers fans. Cam Newton could end up in the big easy as a New Orleans Saint.
Cam Newton’s announcement that he has decided to have foot surgery further complicates his future with Carolina who may no longer be willing to wait and see if Cam Newton can wear the Superman cape again. This would provide an opportunity for another team, perhaps a NFC South rival, to scoop him up.
Now, at least one ESPN NFL writer is wondering if New Orleans may be a great fit for Newton should Drew Brees retire this season.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler thinks Saints head coach Sean Payton would love to see Cam Newton in black and gold. “The wild card here is New Orleans” Fowler said on the ESPN Daily podcast.
Fowler went on to explain how much Sean Payton loved Lamar Jackson in the draft and has always wanted a more mobile quarterback to play in his offense. This would make a free agent Cam Newton very tempting for the New Orleans Saints. Imagine the Payton offense but with a dual threat quarterback. Scary stuff indeed.
The Saints have already proven they can win with backup Teddy Bridgewater, so there would be little risk on bringing in Cam Newton and his possible health concerns along with him. Low risk, high reward, and the possibility of New Orleans dominating the NFC South for several more years.
